Kinja'd!!!

I was at the inauguration and one of my friends was interviewed by the Fox News reporter Jesse Watters. Before this, the Fox News employee (Emma Digiovine) who approached us was violated by a passerby.

Digiovine approached my friend and wanted to interview him. My friend didn’t want to and my other friend asked fill in for him. Digiovine replied with “We just want a gay man.” As they were wrapping up the confrontation, a Trump-hat donning man in his late 30s walked by and stroked his hand across her face, neck and arm. He complimented her with a “beautiful” and walked away. This lasted for about ~10 seconds. At least one friend told the man to stop the interaction.

During this interaction, Digiovine froze and waited until he departed. A friend asked her if she was ok. Disturbingly, she replied, “It’s fine, it happens often” . The interview was not used by Watters’ World.

Don’t normalize sexual harassment, no matter who you work for. Fox News, please give at least a bit of security for your more.....prominent reporters.

These are the same lesser mortals who are whining that Audi’s ad was wrong and too political.

Yeah but you know... The war on Christmas, Obama being a Muslim, these are things you need to care about. Btw, Roger Ailes says “hi” :)

That’s terrible but at least he didn’t grab her by the pu**y.

And I think it’s just plain awful that she views that as a “normal” occurrence. Makes you wonder what her working conditions back at FOX HQ are.

I can’t stand Watters. There’s just something about him. Pompousness maybe...I don’t know.

Someone I know who was interviewed by him described him as “creepy”.

They were operating on a 3 (or 4)-person crew (Her, Watters, camera/audio people). After my friend’s interview, he got completely swarmed by a pack of his fans. She was wandering about looking for interview subjects most of the time.

From Megyn Kelly’s interviews and Gawker’s (rip) pieces of Fox News, it seems to be full of misconduct-behavior-normalized folks.

“stroked his hand across her face, neck and arm.” this is so bizarre i’m having difficulty thinking about what is actually happening.

It’s not bizarre at all, in that you’d be hard pressed to find a woman this (or something similar) HASN’T happened to at least once.

I can tell you about the times it has happened at EVERY single job I’ve worked since I was a teenager, except my current one.

I’m in my 30s now.

As I just responded to gmporschenut... it IS a normal occurrence for many women. I’ve never met a woman this hasn’t happened to. It’s happened to me, many times, in every single job I’ve worked except my current one.

But it’s not necessarily about the work environment you’re in. granted, Fox News (and this show in particular) won’t ever win any awards for gender equality or sticking up for their female employees), but this shit happens at other workplaces and in other environments, too.

I doubt Watters would have come to the aid of his coworker no matter the environment, but I also have a feeling that this particular environment — being in a crowd — had a little something to do with her treatment getting ignored by everyone besides OP and his friends. You’d be surprised how often men suddenly go “blind” to the harassment of their female coworkers and friends.

It’s called the Bystander Effect. The more witnesses there are to a bad thing happening, the less the chances are that someone will step in and help as they’re all waiting for someone else to do it.

I, too, took Introduction to Psychology.

My point was that, bystander effect or not, LOTS of people, even people you wouldn’t think would stand idly by, will ignore the sexual harassment of women. (My addendum to that point was that the bystander effect exacerbated that non-action in this incident, irrespective of OP and his friends).

Even we women, just as this Fox News staffer, will freeze up while it’s happening, downplay the terror of what happened afterwards, blame ourselves, not stick up for ourselves, or similar.

I’ve responded a variety of different ways each time I’ve been harassed. Sometimes I speak up. Sometimes I physically interact with the person to get them to stop. Sometimes I look for an exit and leave as quickly as possible. But in a crowd full of Trump supporters, after already having been physically assaulted, I can’t say I wouldn’t have reacted the exact same way this woman did: by freezing and remaining stock still and silent until it was over. At that point, surrounded by a bunch of people who view you as less than human, and who would likely have no compunction about harming you, self preservation becomes paramount.
