Out with the turbo, in with the v6

Kinja'd!!!

I bought a Honda v6 J series engine from a wrecked Acura (yes it’s vtec, yo) and once it’s in I will never get passed by a Camry again. In fact, I’ll be fast. Straight line fast. In a Miata. Okay I’m going to need a minute....

The reason I decided to ditch the turbo plans is because naturally aspirated Miata is best Miata. Find me a build thread with a Turbo and I’ll show you pages of cooling problems. Also, v6 swap is just a lot cooler. You see very few whereas Turbo is the go to power adder. Doesn’t hurt that the engine swap should end up being significantly cheaper than the turbo buil.

I drove one of superfastmiatas’ v6 swapped cars last week and holy mother of God it’s all I’ve ever wanted. Absolute rocket ship and the balance is still fantastic. it’s hard to complain with 300 hp 300 ft/lbs of tourqe. Stay tuned.

Oh damn, that’s pretty hot. At what RPM will you make VTEC kick in?

J32?

Are you planning a manual? If not, good luck. The J-series engines are notorious for eating automatic gearboxes.

I’m going to be completely honest, I actually have no idea what VTEC is. But I know I have it!

Manual. There will be no automatics in this engines future

It’s a relatively simple form of variable valve timing that switches to a more aggressive cam profile when you hit a certain RPM.

There are companies that make adapters for J-series engines to bolt to Miata gearboxes.

I think on the J series, its around 3K. A bit later for the bigger displacement ones.

My thoughts exactly. I’m probably going to do more of a home brew, I’m just using their info as a guide.

Ls Swapping an rx7... Yeah. That would definitely work. Now you need something to swap the rotary into

I can dig it. With a few mods a J32 DNA make as much power as a new V6 Mustang, while keeping the whole car under 2500lbs. Sure you’re adding weight, but a turbo, and an intercooleradd weight too.

What transmission are you going to use? I’m guessing the stick Miata box can’t angle that much power. Edit: just read the product discretion, still not sure I’d trust it tho.

Looks like the hardest part will be modifying the intake plenum. Since the factory location for the throttle body is right where the firewall will be.

I bought it as a shell with no rotary so thats why im swapping it lol

Engine alone is only a 40 lb gain, I’ll be working pretty hard to keep supporting mods lightweight. That said with the giant boost in power... I may even consider adding some “luxury” features.... Upgraded sound system, extra insulation... Who knows.

Transmission should be good, from what I’ve been reading 300-325 is about the sweet spot for maximum power. Over 350 is where you have to swap transmissions every track day. And this is more of a street car anyways so the wear and tear should be a bit less.

Yeah that was my thought too. Not 100% sure what I’ll do about that yet

YEsssss I love kswapped miatas! They sound so good. I imagine this will sound just as awesome as those. This is why I wish Honda and Mazda would team up to make a super roadster. Honda can supply the motor and Mazda can build the chassis/suspension.

Awesome! I’ve always wanted to do a cool NA swap in a Miata, my fantasy engine was the F20C...

It looks like some people are just, flipping the intake around to fast forward, but Honda used quite a few intakes on the engines, so who knows which ones work, and which don’t

Any way good luck, this looks like an awesome idea. I had always thought the S20000s F20 would be the best engine in a Miata, but with the J it’ll be a torque monster so that should be lots of fun.
