My dad keeps insisting he needs a 12" miter saw. Wouldn’t a 10" double bevel sliding be just as good?

Kinja'd!!!

Also any particular brands that stick out? makita dewalt?

12" is much better, if your cutting a 45 degree angle your cut depth is greatly reduced. 12 is worth it

I have a fixed 10". So wish I would’ve invested in the 12" slider. There are so many uses for it that you run into in your life as a homeowner.

Now instead of just walking up to my miter and making a quick angled cut on a wide board I have to get out seven tools and clamps and my circular saw. It is a huge time saver to have the larger slider.

thats a good point. there is nothing worse than being in the middle of a job and only having 4/5 of the tool you need.

I finished my basement last year and had to resist going out and buying one about 1/4 of the way through framing.

I’ve got a 12" craftsman sliding compound and it is awesome. It’s not much more cost and takes up little more space than a 10". Mine is about 7 years old, but very similar to this model. It’s carried me through many remodel and other projects without skipping a beat. The last time I had to try cutting a 45 without it left me cursing and then I drove home to get it.

I hadn’t really thought how much cut length is lost when at a 45deg.

A 10" slider is pretty great, but a 12" slider is so much better, and not that much more expensive. DeWalts are very good and reasonably priced, especially when they go on sale. You can also find one of the older DeWalt DW708 sliders used pretty cheap. That’s what I have at home, and I love it. It is super easy to use and accurate, and has great capabilities. The only bad thing I can say about it, is the saw needs to be clamped or screwed down to use it, otherwise it falls over.

Now if I was going to splurge on a new saw, I’d spend a bit more and get a new Bosch hinge-armed 12" slider. That saw is BA.

Thanks.

I keep checking out pawn shops and craigslist but the ones I’ve seen look really beat up.

would you recommend getting one with an electric brake or laser?

No problem. I’m a tool nerd, so I’m always happy to talk about them :)

There are good ones out there, but those are always the first sold of course.

Electric brake, definitely. I personally don’t like the lasers. The great thing about a slider is you can bring the saw teeth right to your mark. The laser then is redundant and (to me personally) annoying.

I’ve got a 10" Makita dual slide compound saw that has been awesome for me. One of my contractor buddies told me to go with the 10" over a 12" saw as the blades are slightly more rigid. YMMV, but this saw has been overkill for me.

The stand is awesome since you are working at waist height instead of kneeling on the ground, plus its got a roller for feeding in long pieces and you can easily set a stop if you’re cutting a whole bunch of boards to the same length.

Well some a total shit, even some from supposedly good brands. I would make sure the mechanism for locking adjustments is good. When we taught some union classes we had a few of them and some were just crap. I think the DeWalt was pretty good.

I just learned that the 780 also periodically goes on sale with a free stand in may before fathers day. My see if I can borrow my uncles miter one last time

It looks like the 709 it’s just a slightly tweaked version of the old 708 that I have. That is a fantastic saw. The only nit I have to pick with it, is it must be clamped or screwed down to use.

I have the 10" version of the 780 at my school’s shop. It’s a pretty good saw, but I do not like the bevel angle adjustment at all. The 709 will be much better for that.

I haven’t used either that Makita or that Bosch, but I noticed in their pictures that they both have the old screw type miter angle locks. Those are a pain and I’m so happy to never use one of those again.

Of those four, I’d get the 709. Yeah the 780 has a some more depth and height cutting capacity, but the 709 has plenty and the bevel angle adjustment is so so much better. That’s a nice price too, I paid $400 for my used 708 about 10 years ago.
