200HP for a sports car that does nothing else might be too low. But 200HP is right about where you want to be for a base trim hothatch like a Fiesta or a GTI. It could have favorably positioned itself against those cars with a useful backseat and practical trunkspace. A slower, but still practical BRZ is a better sell against the WRX than a slower, less practical, but as-expensive two seater. It should have been a hothatch.

It needed, more power, more practicality or a convertible option. Otherwise the only people who truly want one are those who really wanted low weight over anything else. I’d argue that was a small segment.

it didnt need more power, what it needed was more torque in the mid range.

all of those cars you mentioned are turbos and have really fat, meater mid ranges. the BRZ has diddly-squat there

They could never have given it 4 useable seats and kept it as low and short as it is, so polo/fiesta style hot hatch wouldn’t have worked. But you’re right in that they should have made it a liftback: would have made it a lot more practical, and it would work with the AE86 heritage.
