I heard an American recently calling diesel “diessel”with an “s” sound.

Is this the usual pronunciation over there?

Have your choice of green or black nozzles.

No, I’ve never heard anyone say it like that. It’s always “DEEZ-el”. Once in while the “z” does sound more like a proper “s”, but only in a casual way. It’s never overly enunciated.

I’ve heared it pronounced like that before, but only occasionally. I don’t think it’s incorrect though.

Nope we don’t pronounce it like that.

We do however use green for diesel and black for gas (petrol):

You also have choices of petrol and different octane numbers, just because.

I associate that pronunciation with the southern states, but I’ve never been there so I don’t know. I think around here I only hear it if someone is putting on a southern accent to make fun of a bro truck or something like that. More like “dissel”, though.

This is at my local Chevron. Those are US octane ratings and the 92 is ethanol free clear premium. They also have high quality E85. Too bad it’s across town, or I would go there all the time. Yes I do believe the 110 is $9.39 a gallon.

Not uncommon in my area of the southeast - usually an ‘s’, but not very stressed or extended. Regional distribution of that pronunciation seems scattershot - southeast, western midwest, portions of Cali...
