Kinja'd!!!

Great picture, looks like something from my area. I haven’t winter biked in years but used to do the trails at night with headlamps and a bike light. If we get any more snow I’ll be out on the bike or my cross-country skis.

Lately I’ve been shopping cheap USB battery bank powered LED bike headlights. Lots on eBay for only about $10 with Cree made LEDs , that ship from China or Hong Kong. Most have 3-4 brightness settings. Then you can choose whatever battery you want for power. Will have to McGyver a battery holder with velcro strap. With 3000 to 5000 lumens there is 1/4 mile of light , equivalent to about 60-80 watt car headlamp. There are some with only 2000 lumens also, PLENTY of light and longer battery life. Way more compact than my old Specialized bike halogen headlamp. Just haven’t made a choice because I want a good brand name battery since so many fires have happened with lithium ion stuff.

Holy shit that’s like having a flood light strapped to your head. I think mine is a 100 lumen LED

No shit, my Specialized halogen was only about 15 or 20 watts (about 250 lumens) and did a super job. They have head straps or rubber type handlebar mounts on these. With that much light being in the bars will be sufficient and allow you not to blind motorist when on roads because you can control it being aimed downwards more. I would likely get a small flashlight LED type light to clamp on bars so I don’t piss off the motorists. Those are under $10 on eBay too.

I recently grabbed a $30 torch-style LED light that clamps onto my handlebars from Amazon. Typical BS in the description with fake pictures and made up lumens ratings so my expectations weren’t high. It works... but really is suited for night-time city riding where there are some sources of light. On its own on a trail it doesn’t provide nearly enough light. Interesting comparo video:

From what I’ve seen I should be able to get a fairly bright lamp and a longer lasting and safer battery by shopping the lamp on eBay and computer/phone USB battery at Amazon or local. I figure for under $60 I can have a kick butt bright lamp plus a cheaper Cateye LED for in traffic. My last lamp from Specialized was fine for about 18 months and then had battery and switch issues. Thats not what you want with new pricey bike lighting systems, the quality just wasn’t there. With the new direction I’m taking if the light dies I can get another for well under $20 and can pick up any fair size USB backup battery either cheap or quality and still have less invested. Will need to make some sort of seal setup for the battery and USB plug but I figure I’ll get some sort of nylon bag and velcro for the frame and have the wire routed from the bottom to avoid intrusion from gravity.
