Meh. Nice to have music again but aftermarket radios stick out like a sore thumb.

Kinja'd!!!

Spent about an hour trying to cram all this shit into my dash.

Why did you get rid of the factory head unit?

I actually like the pioneer unit in my Mini.

I like the red back lighting, at least it matches OEM.

Did you have to deal with the Bose shit? I want a new head unit, real undercover, no disc, no tape, just Bluetooth. But I’d also have to do new speakers and new wiring to get the Bose amps out.

That doesn’t look bad. But the cramming junk into the dash is a nuisance.

My first one broke and chasing down another one took a week or two because they’re impossible to find, then that one failed on me and I said fuck it.

Yeah it’s a good unit. Bluetooth, USB, all that goodness. Wired up the microphone to my steering column. I just dont like how aftermarket it looks

Yeah. It’s a bit closer to the OEM orange in person.

Ah, that makes sense. I saw your post earlier that said you were changing it and I was wondering why.

That blue box in the wiring harness converts the speaker out to a signal attuned for Bose amps. Works great. Had slightly weak bass but a little equalization fixed that up

Seriously. I had to extend the wiring harness a bunch so I could fuck the scoche thing out of the way

yeah not really thrilled with the headunit market today. Can’t imagine Pioneer is thrilled either.

Cool! I got a quote to do new speakers, and 1din head unit, and remove the Bose shit. It broke down to 150 speakers, 120 head, and 80 labor. It seems pretty damn reasonable. But I haven’t pulled the trigger yet.

Not bad. What brand speakers were they going to use?

I picked out these, cheaper online, but I figure it gets rolled into the install price:

I had a nissan maxima that also ran the bose system that I upgraded to an aftermarket head unit and the converter works great. Basically each speaker has its own amp so instead of amplified signal running the speaker like a conventional system the converter turns output of the aftermarket head unit into the required standard rca style audio input to feed each speakers amp. unless you have blown speakers no reason to swap the existing. if I recall you can get the converter for 30 -50 so could save money too.

The only thing I know about Bose is that they make shit and market the hell out of it. When I do get the audio done it will be a complete boseectomy.

Let me know how you like that one. Its on my shortlist of head units for the explorer and I want a doubledin specifically

It’s pretty good so far, though I can’t get the Pioneer ARC app to connect, though I don’t really care about it nor have I put much effort. It’s only driving two speakers through the bose line-level attenuator (blue box) but I intend on making a wiring harness for a rear set of speakers and wiring them to some bass shakers I’ll put in the seatbacks, similar to the NC Miata.

Yeah it’s real simple, you completely remove the OEM radio and speakers. Then ignore the existing wiring and run your own. Then everything simply works. I will gladly do ten times the work when it comes to electronics just to avoid headaches later.

It does kinda stick out in a Miata, but hey function is way more important than form! My OEM headunit is just a clock, not plugged into anything. Amplifying the speakers though really helps with making it audible with the top down on the freeway. Thats why the Bose crap actually sounds decently loud (although not decently good), its got like 100W RMS going to it. Most plug-and-play aftermarket stuff is gonna be hard to get loud.
