I think you guys would appreciate it if I had video of almost getting hit head on by a California.

So... Suggestions? Which ones are good and which do I need to stay away from?

Do you know a Russian? They seem to all have dash cameras, I’m sure that person would have a good recommendation.

Nope. Everyone I know who lives internationally is from China, Germany, or South Korea.

I know a Russian girl from the time I spent in Siberia, I’m thinking about getting a dash cam, I’ll ask her for a recommendation. When I was over there I was like Irina, what kind of dash camera do you have. To which she responded, I don’t have one, but my parents do.

I just got the Rexing V1P camera in December. It was a very easy install, and it’s pretty darn discrete. Comes with a rear camera too. I like it so far, the video shoots at 1080p and looks great once its on the computer. It’s a little spendy at $129.99.

FWIW, I use B40/A118, and I think it works pretty well. It might be a bit dated at this point though. I’d avoid anything with a suction cup mount (bounces around, blocks a lot more of the windshield, less discrete), though it seems most cams are going with adhesive mounts these days.

You should go to a local fry’s. The brand I’m going to buy is uniden its pretty nifty, and i’m in Georgia so its way more wild out here.

I’m also in GA despite the M3 wearing TX plates, it’s a little more wild in Russia.

The more you can afford to spend, the better. I’m lusting over some of the $300 ones, but until then, I make do with an off-brand one that I found for under $40.

It’s a cheap Chinese unit labelled as “HDE-C18" (but I’ve seen what appears to be the same exact product sold under other names like “i1000"). The main feature that attracted me to it was its dual-channel recording so that I can catch things going on behind me as well.

The picture quality isn’t that great (check YouTube for examples). It can read license plates if the other car is close by, but after a car-length or two I start to lose those fine details. It’s much worse at night, when things get really grainy. It will manage to pick up license plates if I’m stopped at a red light, where my headlamps can light the plate up.

But aside from the image quality, it’s actually pretty good for the price. The picture is still technically “HD”, and it has all the common dash-cam features like loop recording, motion detection, still image capture, etc. and having that second channel is a huge plus that most dash-cams don’t offer. I also like that it’s low-profile and I can tuck it behind my rear-view mirror instead of having to mount some chunky GoPro unit.

If you don’t mind super cheap, I have one of the tens of Chinese knockoffs of this model:

https://www.amazon.com/Lecmal-Recorder-Rotatable-Dashboard-Camcorder/dp/B01HEK2GAU/ref=sr_1_4?s=car&ie=UTF8&qid=1486255651&sr=1-4&keywords=dash+cam&refinements=p_36%3A1253503011

does the job, but can’t hold a charge on its own after a month or two.

will one day breakdown and buy one with a front and rearview option

Yup I’m in Roswell, well until I find a new job then hopefully getting out of here. Jimmy Carter is a bitch to drive on.

When I rode in taxis in Russia, I learned why they all have dash cams.

I have a Blackvue hardwired in to my DD - not the cheapest, but very reliable, and highly rated. A recent random snap on a cloudy day:

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

I’ve started using my phone as a cam, via free apps, when I am in my old car. Unfortunately, it’s impossible to aim the camera without being blocked by the camera mount, and it is more prone to vibration and distortion than a purpose-built cam, but it works for the price I guess:

Lol, yeah. I’m subscribed to a channel on youtube who focus on those. But I’ve had too many closer encounters not to invest in it to be honest.

This site has a LOT of reviews and recommendations. I settled for an A119S, night time shots are pretty good.
