Kinja'd!!!

I’m replacing that passenger door, putting in the EP3 CTR carpeting in and swapping out the instrument cluster from my 2000 to 2001:

I would love to do an instrument cluster swap on my Hyundai Accent...my 2009 base model got this - not bad, with a lime green backlight, but I miss the temperature gauge I had on my old Subaru:

Other Accent trims came with this version of the same cluster with an added Temp gauge rather than just an idiot light:

2010 Accents had an even more differentiated gauge style/font and blue/white backlighting instead (you could get them either like mine, or with the temp gauge as well):

My favorite version of the cluster though, is the version for the 2010 Kia Rio - love the style (backlit in red/white)! They just bolt right in as well, as they are sibling cars. They have a slightly different Info Center at the top though, and you have to switch between ODO and TRIP with the TRIP button where the older style, weirdly, shows both at once:

My car only has 112,000kms on it though, so not sure I feel like swapping the clusters and messing up the ODO reading when the original cluster works fine....I’d have to get a legal sticker to mount somewhere in the car proving the cluster was swapped and at what mileage as it would seem a lot like tampering to a lot of folks... :(

I was hoping for digital clusters the mileage would be stored in the ECU. Why would data be stored in the cluster?

Doesn’t make sense to me either, but apparently a lot of cars still store the data in the cluster...I guess if it was in the ECU and you used an aftermarket ECU, you could just edit the ODO reading to whatever you wanted...?

I want to do a cluster swap in my 4runner. I bet the one from a Tundra or Sequoia would fit but I can’t find any info.

Aww man that instrument cluster reminded me of one of the cars that I would love to get, a first gen HR-V (based on the Logo platform) they are so cool looking, but they didn’t sell many in Chile and the ones that exist are either in bad shape or selling for really high prices. Also I would have to order parts from Japan if something goes wrong with it. How popular are those in Japan?

Well, we’ll see what happens when I try it. I can also ask my mechanic what is and isn’t legal. I’m never planning to sell this car anyway. I’m planning to drive it into the ground.

The original HR-V is still very popular.

Looking forward to it, I own a cheap, basic hatchback myself, so it’s nice to follow along your story! :)

In a lot of cases, the vehicle speed sensor is connected directly to the cluster (and, in fact, if the ECU needs to know vehicle speed, it actually gets it from the cluster). Also, it improves reliability if the data is stored closer to where it’s used (the ECU doesn’t care about the odometer, the cluster does, and if you had a communications problem between the cluster and ECU, your odometer still works).

Looks like Honda HDS can transfer data, and there’s ways to do it more... manually...: https://www.tapatalk.com/topic/90863-driveaccord-net/420777-diy-odometer-reprogramming-for-swapped-clusters

That’s way beyond my skill level. :/

Well, Honda HDS can probably just do it over OBD, if you can get a hold of that.

How did that door get creased like that without touching the fender and rear door?

I can buy an HDS, it looks like, but I am also a Mac person, so...

It touched both of them, barely. They both need to be fixed or replaced, but the damage is super minor compared to the door.

I have no idea. It’s damage from the owner BEFORE the previous owner. He also did a bad job repairing it. Believe it or not, that’s actually an IMPROVEMENT from when I got it. I didn’t bog it, but I did sand it, prime it, repaint it, and clearcoat it. Whereas before, the dude just spray painted an approximately close color directly over the damage.

Neither he nor the person I bought it from cared because it’s totally mechanically sound, and that’s all they cared about.

Honestly though I love your little Honda. The updates are one of my favorite things to read about here. Love how you’re really making it your own!
