FULL RACE REPLAY

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

Once again, HD stream by NISMO / channel 7 and commentary by Radiolemans. Before we set off, some updates:

Kinja'd!!!

#99 BMW M6 GT3 - Walkenhorst BMW have elected to withdraw from Class A after damage sustained at the end of qualifying yesterday, where they lost control and hit the wall coming down the mountain at Elbow. There was not sufficient time to make repairs to the chassis.

Kinja'd!!!

#59 McLaren 650S GT3 -Tekno McLaren have withdrawn from Class A after the car spun backwards into the wall at the Chase yesterday. The replacement parts for the chassis damage were too far away from Bathurst to make it in time for the start of the race, thus the car has been retired. The engine will be swapped into the #1 car, which will now start from pit lane.

Updates as they become available.

(UPDATE 1:50 PM EST) Green flag!!

Kinja'd!!!

Kinja'd!!!

(UPDATE 1:58 PM EST) #8 has a scare at the top of the mountain at McPhillamy Park. Sulet had a puncture on the right rear which sent the back end of the car into the wall. No suspension damage.

Kinja'd!!!

Kinja'd!!!

(UPDATE 2:05 PM EST) - #74 Audi spun at the top of the mountain and rolled backwards into the middle of the track. The AM GTR squeezed by and clipped the R8, followed by one of the Bentleys. Additionally, the #23 GTR is being rolled into the garage (NOOOOOOOOOOOOO)

Kinja'd!!!

Kinja'd!!!

(UPDATE 2:25 PM EST) #23 GTR back out (was in for a vibration on the left r! #74 recovered, field has been neutralized behind the safety car and it’s about to go green again.

Kinja'd!!!

(UPDATE 2:52 PM EST) Drama for the #1 with Rob Bell behind the wheel. Tekno feared engine overheating during the race and even swapped the engine from the #59 prior to the race. The car had gone into limp mode and was dumping fuel into the exhaust, though Bell tried his hardest to drive the car back to the pits against team orders to stop the car at risk of burning down the back end.

Kinja'd!!!

Kinja'd!!!

Kinja'd!!!

(UPDATE 3:15 PM EST) Safety car! The Grove Hire Porsche slid out wide at the same place the GTR did during practice (Sukman park?), only this time it was full speed, rear first into the wall. #88 AMG GT3 also suffered some rear end damage. Teams making pit stops now.

Kinja'd!!!

(UPDATE 3:45 PM EST) More drama! #90 BMW brushed the wall at some point at the top of the mountain and broke the right front suspension. #50 Porsche spun backwards at the Audi Cutting.

Kinja'd!!!

Kinja'd!!!

In other news, Mardenborough leads the race! Zombiezilla rules the mountain!!

Kinja'd!!!

(UPDATE 4:10 PM EST) What a drive from Mardenborough right now. Massive pressure from Engel (factory Merc driver) and Lowndes, but he’s holding them off on 34 lap old tires and managing traffic. Don’t care what the haters say, Jann is so deserving of his drives. A very well deserved drive from NISMO for this year in Super Formula and the Impul GT500 cars. Go Nissan!

Kinja'd!!!

Kinja'd!!!

(UPDATE 4:30 PM EST) One of the MARC Cars Australia Fords spins the #47 - safety car and more pitting!

Kinja'd!!!

(UPDATE 4:42 PM EST) #75 spins at turn 1 and collects one the MARC Cars Mazda. The car was in P6 at the restart.

Kinja'd!!!

Kinja'd!!!

(UPDATE 5:00 PM EST) #35 goes straight off at Turn 1. Miedecke was okay and got out under his own power.

Kinja'd!!!

Class leaders after 4 hours:

Kinja'd!!!

(UPDATE 5:15 PM EST) What a mess of a restart. #22 overlapped #88 at the restart and spun the Ferrari. Top job to the recovery crew for getting the car out of the gravel before the safety car came back around.

Kinja'd!!!

Kinja'd!!!

(UPDATE 5:55 PM EST) #60 spins the R37 entering the Konrad straight. Broken rear for the McLaren. Another safety car out.

Kinja'd!!!

Kinja'd!!!

(UPDATE 6:20 PM EST) Kelly is still leading at the moment in the #23 GTR. He’s on his 26th lap of this stint, and Mardenborough before him managed 37L so it’s nearly time to pit. Also, let’s appreciate the kerb cam - top job to the production team down there!

Kinja'd!!!

Kinja'd!!!

Kinja'd!!!

(UPDATE 6:35 PM) Safety car! #7? #8? Class B car off in the gravel at Turn 1. Again, P2 in class in that class.

Kinja'd!!!

(UODATE 6:52 PM EST) Loose bonnet for the #7 as he was in the dirty air behind one of the lamborghinis. Nearly missed the entry to pit late! Nothing a load of 100mph tape wont fix.

Kinja'd!!!

(UPDATE 7:25 PM EST) One of the MARC cars is into the wall at the top of the mountain. Every. Year. But props to them, the chassis is engineered very well. Thankfully it was a light brush as opposed to a full speed shunt last year.

Kinja'd!!!

(UPDATE 7:32 PM EST) Not a good race for the #7. Ingall clipped the inside fence coming down the mountain just like Chiyo-san, only at speed it bounced off into the outer fence. The damage is pretty terminal.

Kinja'd!!!

(UPDATE 7:50 PM EST) #48 KTM spun backwards at the Audi cutting but managed to make a sketchy three point turn without issue (though he got really close to the wall). A few laps later, the #5 R8 was spun backwards into the gravel at Turn 1 and beached.

Kinja'd!!!

Kinja'd!!!

Kinja'd!!!

(UPDATE 8:35 PM EST) #41 Cayman is off into the gravel deep into the chase. Unsure whether or not that wheel belongs to it.

Kinja'd!!!

(UPDATE 9:00 PM EST) #24 is back in the garage to repair a stuck gearbox actuator. :(

Kinja'd!!!

(UPDATE 9:15 PM EST) #54 MARC Cars Ford spins at the Audi Cutting; they lost the engine, so another safety car is sent out. Lots of teams diving in and doing brake changes.

Kinja'd!!!

(UPDATE 9:52 PM EST) #55 Ginetta hard into the wall at the Dipper and beached on a curb. All teams diving into the pits. #22 beats #88 out on track because Maranello Motorsports are doing a pad change. Also. WOOO #23 BACK OUT ON TRACK (albeit 120 laps down)

Kinja'd!!!

Kinja'd!!!

(UPDATE 10:15 PM EST) Long in the #12 spun Engel in the #33 coming through the chase.

Kinja'd!!!

Kinja'd!!!

(UPDATE 10:35 PM) NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO. Nismo have been having it rough today, and the second of the privateer (ex Always Evolving) GTRs just went straight on at the dipper. Massive front end damage and enough force to throw the hood over the barrier. #35 initially slid out wide and tapped the outer fence, which then sent the car into the inner fence head on.

Kinja'd!!!

Kinja'd!!!

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

Rather embarrassingly, it appeared that I fell asleep some time after the #66 went off at the Dipper. So, here is a roughly chronological list of events that occured with 3 hours to go:

#66 was recovered from the Dipper with the massive front end damage you see here. It pains me to see the ex-Always Evolving car like this, but I’m glad Poordad is okay. A truly heart breaking race for Nismo.

Kinja'd!!!

Kinja'd!!!

#76 Aston Martin Vantage GT4 gets another right front puncture and limps its way back to the pits.

Kinja'd!!!

#88 driven by Vilander sets a blistering pace - this performance somehow was even better than his night stints in the rain at Daytona. Vilander was consistently doing 2:03s/2:04s the entire stint, and was opening up a massive gap to Long who was chasing him behind (2:07s). A truly world class drive from the finn.

Kinja'd!!!

#75 Jamec-Pem Audis have had an unlucky race. This car, which was previously off and tagged by the MARC Mazda, was overtaking traffic but misjudged the fact that the MARC Ford it was passing had another car to its right. Wheel to wheel contact lead to right front puncture, but not before spinning both cars off into the gravel at the Chase.

Kinja'd!!!

Kinja'd!!!

#65 Viper of Daytona Sportscars has a brief dab of oppo coming down the mountain, and lays two massive black lines in its wake.

Kinja'd!!!

#88 with Whinncup behind the wheel has a brief scare at the Chase as the rear end suddenly comes out. He managed to hold it and only take a light dip in the gravel.

Kinja'd!!!

#17 still lapping quickly despite a minor air-jack hiccup in the puts. One of a handful of cars still doing 2:04s.

Kinja'd!!!

#22 SVG chasing down #1 Parente, although the McLaren is still a lap down. Impressive drive from the guys when you consider this car nearly blew up a few hours ago.

Kinja'd!!!

The MARC Cars Fords do look good. The #91 wears the refreshed Focus bodywork, though its odd hearing a smooth v8 burble from its exhausts.

Kinja'd!!!

Dog fight between the R8s! Audi Sport Customer Racing Australia has really flourished this season.

Kinja'd!!!

Kinja'd!!!

The past two hours has been an amazing run of green flag racing. Whincup just lapped the #17 Bentley, both of whom were showing blistering pace. The Maranello Motorsports car has been on fire this entire race.

Kinja'd!!!

Problems for the Ice Break Porsche! Came into the last corner too hot and clipped the back end of the Huracan, which sent it backwards into the gravel. Thankfully it wasnt too deep and both were able to get going again.

Kinja'd!!!

Kinja'd!!!

GOOOOOOOOOO NISSAN. It makes me sad to see them not in the running, but I find joy in that they are running at all. The Nismo guys poured their hearts into repairing these two cars, and they are running like champs. Now to wait for somebody to make these in 1:18...

Kinja'd!!!

Kinja'd!!!

Fire for the Huracan GT3! Seemed to be just an exhaust fire but they drenched it in retardant nonetheless.

Kinja'd!!!

ZOMBIEZILLA LIVES.

Kinja'd!!!

A scary moment for Whincup. SVG on double stinted tires was moving the Ferrari over to try and hold the lead since the AMG GT3 has terrible straight line performance. The #88 had just pitted for fresh tires and the pace allowed it to breeze past the #22 with ease, just as it shifted into 6th gear. While I would have liked to see Chiyo-san drive the #23 in such an amazing move, I congratulate Whincup.

Kinja'd!!!

It appears that Youtube caps long live streams at 11 hr 55 minutes, so I will have to now diligently search for the final 30 minutes. Or just wait for nismo to upload the rest. Sigh. I already know what happens next, but for the sake of completion!

UPDATE - Nismo TV have uploaded the final half hour of the race! Highly recommend you watch this.

Kinja'd!!!

This is where it started to go downhill for SVG. Refusing to lift in his quest to chase down Whinncup, he tapped this Porsche coming out of the chase which spun it into the wall. Understandably, some angry crew members walked over to the HTP pits for a word.

Kinja'd!!!

There isn’t a sadder sight than to see such a beautiful Cup car with massive front end damage like this, especially when they were running flawlessly and it was out of their control.

Kinja'd!!!

Kinja'd!!!

Then SVG went and spun himself coming down the mountain. Still pushing to close the gap to the Ferrari but on double stinted tires, he clipped the curb which upset the rear end and slid him into the wall.

Kinja'd!!!

He didn’t make it far before parking the car in the middle of the track with some terminal front end damage. Maro Engel wasn’t too pleased either.

Kinja'd!!!

Kinja'd!!!

McLaren into the gravel!

Kinja'd!!!

Very careful with his next few words, Engel was. One can’t imagine just how he must have felt after a strong drive for hours on end.

Kinja'd!!!

What a rocket the GTR is, still after all these years. Despite being so far down the order, they still have the pace to out-drag a 911 and a 488 down the Konrad straight just as they did last year.

Kinja'd!!!

Kinja'd!!!

Such a shame they couldn’t finish better.

Kinja'd!!!

Nonetheless congrats to Vilander, Lowndes, and Whincup for an incredible race! Congrats to all teams who made it to the end as well.

Kinja'd!!!

The 59's hit didn’t even look that bad. Odd that they weren’t able to fix it for the race. Also odd that they are choosing to swap the #1s engine instead of running the current engine and keeping their starting position.

#59 suffered structural damage to the chassis. The cross member they needed was on the continent but in Gold Coast, which is 670km from the track. The #1 was having cooling issues, and given the temp is supposed to hit 40C during the race better safe than sorry.

Did you know a GTR GT3 is about 3 inches wider than a Bentley Continental GT3?

Kinja'd!!! "chaozbandit" (chaozbandit)
02/04/2017 at 14:11, STARS: 0

Actually they’re nearly the same. The GTR knocked off the R8's bumper.

GTR GT3 width: 2036mm

Continental GT3 width: 2030mm

Still the GTR was able to punch a big enough hole for the Bentley to easily fit through.

Momentum! The GTR was also riding the wall on the right side.

Yup, The GTR hit both the wall and the Audi but the Bentley only grazed the Audi.

RIP the Audi. That was awfully sketch on the back of the flatbed.

RLM said they had difficulty getting to onto the flatbed because the tow hooks were torn off in the crash.

Yeah. One of the front corners / wheels looked pretty bent too.

He hit hard. It looks like the initial impact pulled the front bumper over the front hook and then the GTR took the rear one as an early morning snack.

Safety car is busy today. Is this normal in a Bathurst race?

Kinja'd!!! "chaozbandit" (chaozbandit)
02/04/2017 at 18:05, STARS: 0

Pretty normal, though its definitely gone out more often in 4 hours than last year. More cars turning into each other than crashing into the walls.

What class is that old Comp Coupe Viper running in and where is it in class? That’s one awesome relic to see racing with these modern machines!

Daytona Sportscars is running the ex-RPM Motorsport (British GT) Viper in the International Class. They are currently 42 overall, 8th in class so I’m guessing they retired. They’ll be back next year with both the Daytona they raced in 2016 and this viper.

It appears I was wrong! They are still running just... very down the order. It is nice seeing a viper in any form still racing, in Australia of all places.

That was a big hit for the Nissan. Currently pulling for the McLaren to get past the Ferrari and get a safety car. I think they have the pace to challenge for the win if only they can get their lap back.
