Any Idea Why My Yamaha Is Backfiring Intermittently?

Kinja'd!!!

After years of giving no fucks, maybe it is time to start giving a few. Our trusty steed here backfires every time the engine first starts and then randomly off and on as you drive. With a car engine I’d start by looking at spark and timing, but I don’t know where to start here. Thanks in advance (no pun intended). It is an overhead valve engine, probably around 300cc. It’s done this before, and it mysteriously went away, but now it’s back. Oh hey look it’s Project Deathtrap in the background, where it hasn’t moved in over a month now. We rigged up an ignition button under the dash of the Acura to bypass the broken key-switch so there’s that at least.

changed/cleaned your sparkplug recently? Checked your valve clearances?

Carbs? You mess with the mixture at all with temp changes?

Could be - it seems to be worse when it is cold. Carbs are probably over my level of messing with unfortunately.

Good calls. Plug is easy enough to check/replace. I’m not sure I want to pull the head off and mess with the valves, but that could be the next step.

They could just be dirty, try running some seafoam through it. It might not help, but it’s so easy there is no reason not to try it.

Carbs are actually really simple! If you could take it out and remove the float bowl then you can wash stuff in carb clean or seafoam. It helps remove deposits better than just running it through the fuel.

Just so happens I have some seafoam sitting around!

If it’s OHV you only have to remove the valve cover, and it probably has threaded adjustors. Just need to find the spec.
