Kinja'd!!!

I know it’s irrational, but it kills me that this slogan is a lie. It’s as if GM decided to build the Corvette in China; although Canada is more American than China, the Challenger’s appeal is more irrationally rooted in some American mystique than the Corvette’s. I like these cars more and more as they age and stand out from other offerings, but I can’t deny that a some of their appeal is based on false pretense. Does anyone else have an opinion on this?

I think going to other countries and exploiting their labor for cheap prices so that people can buy 500 horsepower cars at half the cost is a very american thing to do.

A car assembled in Canada on an old German platform? Technically, Canada is is in North America, so Canadians are Americans, too.

I’d refer you to Mexico in regards to cheap labor. Other than the favorable exchange rate—which hasn’t been a factor for all that long—it seems to me that there’s not much financial downside to an LX production line in the U.S. More American business practices more American cars do not make (or something)

On principle, making a car in a single country is extremely inefficient purely out of competitive advantage, but obviously you would have to look at the specific numbers of the specific factories and labor rates to decide if it’s cost-effective or not. I don’t think that diminishes the ‘american’-ness of a vehicle, to me, though.

Huh- I was under the impression that the globe is comprised of America and elsewhere. I was going to mention the W211 roots, but it seemed like that was too played out; particularly after the Grand Tour episode, after which everyone was proclaiming that the Challenger “is a 25 year old E-Class.” Using the MB parts bin some just doesn’t strike me as too heretical because it never has any sort of impact on the driver-machine interface. Though neither does the nation of origin for that matter. Hey, life is too short to not be pedantic.

Canada is America’s hat, so it’s America.

I have to differ on the last point (a matter of opinion) but, as I tried to suggest in my post, it’s not really a rational ideal. I just figured someone else may feel the same way, particularly about the Challenger, or Charger to a lesser extent. Given that their whole shtick is another “made in America” campaign, the irony hits home a bit.

By the way, do you still have the S30?

I have a 3 step method to gauging a car’s nationality.

1. Where is the company headquartered?

2. Where was the origin of the brand?

3. Where was the car assembled.

If a majority isn’t reached then default to number 3. So as far as I am concerned the Challenger is a Canadian built, American branded automobile from a British corporation. Now given that there isn’t a majority the Challenger is therefore Canadian which is very Un-American considering how the US was born.

Fair enough. Do we call Quebec a stubborn rooster tail that is stuck under the hat?

Odd. You also gave me proof that MINI is British and not German. Sure BMW is based in Germany but the brand Mini comes from Britain and the cars are built in Britain.

Full Disclosure: I am British and the system was invented to make the argument that Minis are British.

Close: Texas, Lesser USA, Elsewhere. I haven’t even seen that episode of GT yet... I’ve fallen way behind. Having a baby the week before GT premiered can do that. I mentioned the MB connection to the LX/LC chassis because I used to have a Magnum RT. Strangely, it was usually a Mercedes parts bin piece that failed on that car... (mostly front end suspension components, though while not specifically interchangeable with MB parts, they follow the same design)

In person, they have a certain allure. Hence why I am hopefully going to buy one. It isn’t a performance buy, (unless you get the 392 of course) it is more of a GT buy. they are much more comfy/roomy than the competition. where they fall short is age, too heavy and bad crash safety in comparison.

Congrats! And you have some binge watching to do. The Magnum was a cool car, but the Daimler partnership wasn’t exactly the best thing to happen to Chrysler considering Mercedes quality at that time. I’ve never been to Texas but I’d like to think that I’m not living in the best of the U.S. anyways.

Thanks!

The Magnum was a cool car executed poorly... I spent years pining for that car and it disappointed in nearly every possible way. At least the riddance was good.
