and so expensive to fix?

I love the idea of a small manual transmission wagon with luxury and prestige, but I need Japanese reliability. Some shit, but not enough, was shared with the Mazda 3 of the time. OH MAN if only they used the Mazda3 engine, or better yet, the MS3/6 turbo-4! Think a MS6 turbo setup is swappable in this thing?

Bonus: It’s NOT BORING SILVER!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Unfortunately, poor mpg since the turbo-5 and AWD (picture of the trip computer shows just 18 mpg)

If the V50 was a better car, I’d go see it as soon as I could. just too bad it couldn’t be more reliable :(

The P1 platform in general is pretty solid. And there aren’t many issues with the T5 engine. You just need to do the regular maintenance. That one is probably due for a timing belt and water pump and awd service.

But 19 mpg for a turbo 5 cylinder making north of 200 HP and awd really isn’t that bad. Especially considering that car will move.

Looked at one in person from Hueberger Subaru here in Colorado Springs... $16k and it was an auto. I told the salesman the price is waaay to much and he agreed but said it will sell for sure. Ugh

and it only has 109k too

How many miles did your non-turbo have when you bought it? And how many does it have now? How many problems have you had with it?

I was considering these before I got my Legacy. If I hadn’t inherited the Legacy I probably would’ve had a V50 or a V70. I’ve never sat in a V50, but holy crap do V70s ever have nice seats.

Yeah, Volvo is known for their seats, apparently! I’ve always heard good things about their seats, and the V50 is probably no exception.

I just wish there was a Japanese FWD or RWD I4 wagon with a sunroof, manual transmission, and maybe heated eats too. The TSX wagon is too new and too expensive for me right now (and also automatic-only, but I’d take it because it would realistically be the best late-model wagon)

The Subaru’s boxer is too hard to work on, and even their non-turbo versions get poor mpg due to the mandatory AWD (and the fuse to disable it is only available with the automatic), not to mention the head gaskets. Only recently did Subaru FINALLY achieve 30-mpg, about 20 years after the last Justy was last sold here (and was also the last Subaru to get 30 mpg). Subaru needs to bring the 1.6L FWD Impreza over here!

I’ll probably end up with a Matrix XRS or Vibe GT (or possibly a Camry of the same vintage).

Well I will echo what JQJ213 said, they really aren’t that bad reliability-wise, and you could get a FWD and/or non-turbo one for even better mileage and reliability. It’s still the one I’d have, as I have a thing for Volvos.

What about a Mazda3? Same platform as the V50 even, although I think the Volvo is the much better looking car. I’m pretty sure the GTs have heated seats and a sunroof, and it’s a Mazda so you can surely find a manual.

A V50 is merely a fancy mk2 Ford Focus, right? Is it really unreliable and significantly more expensive to fix?

A friend of mine bought one last year, a relatively early one with the bigger diesel engine and about 250k on the odometer. I haven’t heard any complaints yet. It’s his family car.

152K. 154K a year and a half later (mostly just school commuting). No problems besides clearcoat peeling (California problem) and one no-start scenario which resolved itself magically and hasn’t been back since. Besides that, just preventative maintenance and it fires up happily every morning.

We never got the Mk2 Focus over here, as Ford was being cheap and just facelifted the Mk1 until 2012 when the Mk3 came out. And of course, no diesels for us, either.

The only engines we got on the V50 was the I5 they’ve been using forever, in both turbo and NA form. This one is the turbo. I think this motor was used in the Mk2 ST, though.

Can’t have your cake and eat it too.

You want something fun and interesting and European with a manual, you’re going to have to give up your beige sensibilities.

True. But it’s still a fancy Focus, whether you guys got the mk2 or not. Can’t be any worse than that Ford.

We got the V50 with (all pre-facelift):

1.6

1.8

2.0

2.4

T5

1.6D

2.0D

I realize this is purely anecdotal but I’ve owned an S80 and a C70 for a combined total of a year and a half and the only expense I had besides oil changes was the headliner on the C70 ($120). I always considered Volvos to be the most reliable European vehicles even if the parts are more expensive than domestic/Asian brands.

My FWD 2001 V70 T5 averages 18.9 MPG. It’s not so good, but the seats are super comfy and it is quite fast with zero, and I mean zero, body roll. I’ve had it since November and have had zero complaints. Plus, I picked it up for $3,400 from a Volvo tech, so I couldn’t be happier.

My P1 chassis Volvo (C30) is pretty damn reliable and gets about 24 mpgs mixed and about 28 strictly highway. That car probably needs a tune-up. They are pretty fun engines that are easy to make decently powerful. Mine runs a just a tune and is at about 265 HP and 275 lb ft. Working on them is pretty damn easy too. Full suspension swap took me an hour and a half with jack stands and hand tools.
