Kinja'd!!!

I just put two claims in to Caltrans for two blowouts due to potholes. The total is just under $1,000. I don’t think I worded any of it politely.

Kinja'd!!!

That, there, was the most polite part of it -- be glad I’m not sending you claim for $1250 for just the one incident.

I’ll be happy if they send me a check. I’ll be happier if they don’t as negligence equals reckless endangerment in my head and I’ll take them to the fucking cleaners if there’s even a whiff of hesitation.

Fix your shit, Caltrans.

One night in NH coming home from work, I hit a pothole and blew a tire, pulled into the convenience store parking lot, called AAA. Before they arrived, four other people pulled in from the same pothole. AAA driver was able to help us all at once.

Generally I would’ve done it myself, but it was 2* F out and I decided a generous tip for the AAA guy was better since the next guy was calling them too.

I saw this and thought about trying to get some money for the couple of wheels I’ve bent this year on shitty Wisconsin roads (I’ve already filed with the City of Madison to notify them of the location of several potholes, with no response) but it turns out we have pothole liability law that prevents most such claims. Thanks, Obama Wisconsin state government.

That’s sort of like asking if they’re ever going to fix the roads. God only knows.

I wonder if asphalt/concrete aggregate formulas have ever been optimised to the climate in which they are applied.

The moment it rains, a volley of new potholes assaults us all. CA is a dry state by any standard, so I wonder if that dries out the road surfaces and makes them brittle and susceptible to chipping (and eventually becoming huge holes).

Are you in the Bay Area?

I am. Both potholes were in Alameda County. You’re right about the rain causing them to pop up everywhere which has to be a bit overwhelming for Caltrans — but they also seem to never get fixed. Five years ago I lived in Piedmont and would take the Oakland Ave exit every day on my way home from work and there was a pothole big enough you could hide a dead body in it. It’s still there to this day. There’s a similar one just before the Park St. bridge on to Alameda Island. It’s massive and has been there forever. I think the ones that get hit at lower speeds don’t cause enough immediate damage for anyone to bother fixing so Caltrans just doesn’t even bother.

“there was a pothole big enough you could hide a dead body in it. It’s still there to this day”

Meaning the pothole, or the dead body?

It’s Oakland. Somebody might have dug the whole just for that reason.
