This two door, two seat, small truck thing isn’t working anymore.

Kinja'd!!!

Specifically, this full-size:

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

I audibly laughed when they called 15 city/20 highway fuel efficient in the ad. Though that’s pretty close to what my 4.3 gets right now.

That one has everything I want. Right color combo, power everything, remote start, fog lights, aux input on the factory stereo, the 5.3, and the G80 locking rear. No 4WD but eh, shit happens. Throw a bed cover on there and roll. Lose the gold bowties too.

Need to find one with the 6.0l

My friend’s mom has a 2013 Silverado that still has the 4.3 in it. I think it still only makes 200hp, even with way better fuel injection. Also still the 4L60E.

I wish I could find one with the Vortec Max package.

I think until then FINALLY redesigned it for the current generation of trucks, the 4.3 was making 195hp at most.

The 2.5 I4 in the previous gen Malibu made 200.

Yeah, I’m not sure if you could get those in 2wd though. I know they made SS Silverados with the 6.0L. Personally, I make it a point to avoid 1500 series trucks. If you’re going to get a truck, it should tow 10000+ lbs. Plus GM’s 4L60E’s and 6L60E’s give me pause.

You’re right, I just checked. Same power as it’s making in your S10, give or take 5hp.

Wow that’s pretty embarrassing.

Looking at cars.com... you might look for the hybrid, if you’re fuel economy sensitive. You get the 6.0 V8, but even more system power IIRC, and based on used pricing, it looks like the used market is scared of the hybrid system. (Granted, maybe there’s a reason to be scared of it, but IIRC the transmission is basically an Allison design, so that would leave the battery, and I haven’t heard of problems with GM hybrid batteries.) And, you basically get the same highway mileage as you would with a 5.3 or slightly better, and you get no city mileage penalty IIRC, whereas you would get a massive one with the 5.3.

I think it’s a mandatory crew cab, and therefore not the long bed, though. And, you lose some towing capacity compared to the regular 6.0 (IIRC, it’s the same as the 5.3). But, still...

Here’s an example: https://www.cars.com/vehicledetail/detail/681769770/overview/

That’s why the only trucks you saw with 4.3s are work trucks. The 4.8 was pretty much bare minimum for livable power.

Oh I’m not at all fuel economy sensitive. Two of the 3 cars I’ve owned didn’t ever break 2o highway. The third still only got a not entirely stellar 25 highway.

Still, looks like you get 379 hp for the used market price of 315 hp, and probably more consistent torque delivery.

2HY is basically a fully loaded trim, too, IIRC. Those trucks were rather expensive when they were new...

the 5.3 will do just fine....

but then there are 2500 crew with roll up windows. you can find it for decent price if you are lucky.

BUT,

Look how much potential that engine has.

Which also explains why they’re so damn reliable.

16 Chicago winters now in 2wd trucks, only had to be pulled out once (and that was 15 years ago). 4wd is nice and all, but if you’re staying on road it’s really just more crap to break. Especially with the G80 rear.

Apparently I’m wrong, and the power delivery actually kinda sucks - it’s actually a touch slower than the 4.8 to 60, despite having more power than the regular 6.0.

I approve of this. Although if you can believe this, 15/20 isn’t too far off from what a Duramax gets (example, mine gets 14/18, and newer ones do even better on the highway)

I will say that the G80 isn’t exactly known for being...good... There’s one on my K2500HD but once I get up to RamblinRover’s we may have to do a once over on the 4WD (It allegedly works).

That’s awesome, I wouldn’t have guessed you could get that far on just a tune and headers. Their reliability is impressive, my Blazer was a tank, and continues to give its new owner zero issues, motor-wise.

I drove my S10 through an ice storm without issue, 2WD and open diff be damned. 4WD is more a luxury than a necessity to me now.

On the 07-10's check hard for it being an oil burner. Problem is there is no way to check this with out driving for about 1000mi. The early NNBS (this generation of truck) had problems with burning oil that stemmed from the DOD. I have an 11, and as a precaution have a diablo tuner to eleminate the DOD. The problem was “fixed” late in 2010 and most trucks 2011 and newer do not have issues. I don’t want to toatally scare you off, not all trucks have problems and it is only the 5.3's during that time, but there is a reason that there is a big difference in price between the 07-10's and the 11-13's when the truck is basically the same. 11-13 also has the 6l80e as standard on the 5.3.

Go to silveradosierra.com and search oil burner.

Oh, that DOD garbage would be getting shut off asap. I’m in school to be a GM certified tech and have been well taught about DOD and how shit it is on these.

Yeah, my S-10's had open diffs. The one time I had to get pulled out, I got buried in a snow drift up to the frame. I’ll probably get 4wd next time I buy a truck (whenever that is, not soon), but just because I want it. It’s definitely a luxury.

You can absolutely get the 6.0 or later 6.2 in a 2wd truck. There were on a few years that they refered to it as the vortec max package. Other trucks there is no designation on the outside of the truck of it being a “big bore” truck.

Those two motors are definitely ones to get ahold of, but production numbers were low for both. <1% IIRC of all NNBS trucks were 6.0-6.2.

Lastly, the trannys in the V8 trucks are all 4L80's and 6L80's in both M and E varriants. Not sure if the V6 trucks had the 4L60's or not. Seems like a very small transmission for any 1/2 ton truck, but I don’t know for sure.

I can’t recomend the Diablo tuner enough. Just the stock 87 tune is impressive. My truck has 33x11 (285-70x17's) tires and an AirAid MIT intake with a K&N Drop in. Even with the 33's, I still can get 20 on the hwy. Average about 18 driving in rush hour (I’m from STL as well and commute 270 from IL to 70 in MO). All in all they are great trucks and dead simple to work on. Open the hood on a Ram, then open the hood on a Chevy, no comparison. My buddy has a 13 ram and you can’t even see the back 4 plugs. it is a total joke to attempt to work on.

Currently, unless you get a high country or Denali the biggest engine you can get is a 5.3L. And yes the production numbers were very low on the 6.0L in 1500's and especially in 2WD models. I’m also not sure where you think all V8 trucks got the 4l80e, that is simply not true. On GMT800 all non HD trucks got a 4l60e or a 4l65e. On GMT900 the 4l60e/4l65E was used on NonHD trucks until 2009. All current K2xx trucks use 6l80E or 6l90E transmissions.

Well I stand corrected on the 4L60/65. They were all 6L80's though once the made the change to the 6 speed around the 2010/2011 MY Swap.

You are correct on the current generation truck that you can only get the 6.0 in the higher trim levels, but on the NNBS trucks, you could get the 6.0/6.2 in LT trims.
