Grand Tour is defined as “a cultural tour of Europe formerly undertaken, especially in the 18th century, by a young man of the upper classes as a part of his education”. This concept spawned the Grand Tourer, an automobile built to cover great distances at speed in stylish comfort.
The Jaguar XK8 is one such Grand Tourer. A 4.0L (or later 4.2L) V8 up front provides plenty of smooth power to move you along at rapid pace while a luxuriously appointed interior ensures your journey is a comfortable as it is rapid. A clean example can currently be had for around $10,000.
So there is your Question of the Day : For about $10,000, what used Grand Tourer would you own?

The XK8 is definitely a tempting choice. Not much money (upfront) for a good looking, good performing car (that is basically a DB7). Have to be pretty careful with the upkeep though, seem like losts that can go wrong (expensively).

It’s powerful, comfortable, and roomy. And you can even have your friends along on your Grand Tour. I’d say it’s a great GT.

Yep, I’m just saying I could delude myself into ignoring them. In any event, I don’t think they are actually likely to be much different than other grand tourers. Unless you decide something like a Toyota Solara coupe could be considered a grand tourer, in which case I still wouldn’t want it, but it would at least be cheap to maintain.

A CPO Mitsubishi Mirage GT. Basically any modern car is a GT car. They all hit 80 mph and don’t feel like it, and they’re all super plush and comfy. I feel like a Grand Tourer was something relevant in the 80s and maybe even 90s but nowadays every modern car is as comfortable and quick as an old GT.

Bruno Sacco did a great job designing this car. The C140 is my favorite gen CL as well, post 2000 CLs look too cheap for my taste.

I have to disagree. Small cars with jittery suspension that are geared to run at 3500 RPM at 80 MPH are awful on long-distance, high-speed trips.

Not necessarily that color combo, but it’s $1000 under budget.
0-60 in 5.2 seconds, 339 system horsepower, comfortable as fuck, the transmission will be buttery fucking smooth (except for the 1-2 shift for MG2 at around, oh, 75 MPH in a full throttle run), and by current standards, EPA mileage of 22 city, 25 highway... and the average on fueleconomy.gov beats that. Good for bombing down a freeway at high speed, and then, compared to most grand touring coupes, really good on mileage and smoothness driving around town.
If I had to select a coupe, I guess I’ll take a manual SC 300, or an SC 400 (the first-gen, thank you) - it’s about eating up a bunch of miles quickly and comfortably, after all. And, can’t eat up miles if the thing’s broken.
Neither of those cars is what I’d actually buy in the real world - I prefer to do mile eating more efficiently and more slowly - but hey.

$10k can get you a pretty nice Mark IV.
All our roads are quite straight and sometimes bumpy around here, and I’d love to go on a camping road trip again, and the Lincoln would have the suspension and trunk space to accommodate both.

My 924 is actually a surprisingly good touring car. Even though it’s not very powerful it cruises at 80 really comfortably. With some new weather seals this car would be downright pleasant.

The shift that you see is due to MG2's reduction gear shifting.
During this acceleration run, MG1 is absorbing 28% of the engine’s torque (which provides the counter-torque necessary for the rest of the torque to make it to the wheels), and sending the power generated by that to MG2.
However, during the shift, MG2 can’t take full power (note that during the shift, the battery is shown to stop supplying energy to the wheels), and the battery can’t take full MG1 power either, so the engine must reduce power output during the shift.
