Front suspension looks fine. Totally checks out.

He probably heard they just got a shipment of Buffalo Trace on the shelves, drove as fast as he could, jumped a curb and destroyed the front control arms. Then he figured “Hey, a W210 Mercedes is a money pit on a good day, so I’ll just hedge my losses and stick with the booze.”

Neglected possibly 20+ year old car in a rusty climate, it happens. Looks like a spring perch collapse (notorious rust area on these and W202s).

I don’t drink, but I’d sooner spend my money on booze than one of those cars.

It was probably junk some time ago. Early W210s went down the road to beaterdom a while back. Interesting body panel rust anyway, I don’t see them like that out here.

Definite possibility. People always talk about Mercedes ABC and air suspension problems, which these never came with, so I figured it needed stating *shrugs*

Understood. It looks to be a much more fatal problem. The front of his rocker is nearly on the ground. I wouldn’t doubt for a second if the spring perch collapsed from rust or something like that.
When I was a baby (1981), my dad left the house to go to work one morning, and immediately returned. He then said to my mom, “Ummmmm .... I think we’re going to need a new car.” The right side rocker panel of her beloved ‘72 Datsun B210 was laying on the ground. Both strut towers had collapsed overnight from rust.

That, and like shop-teacher said, rust. Some old Mercs in our state rust so quickly it’s not even funny. :’(

Log-rolling down the street while balanced atop a bottle of booze is more reliable than a late-90s Mercedes. Even if that bottle is Jack Daniels (sort of like those Canadian cars in South Park).

I saw one of these (silver pre-facelift W210, just like in the picture) abandoned in a picnic area on Maui. It was covered with grime, and someone had crudely pried open the trunk. Didn’t this generation of the E-Class have a problem with rust?
"shop-teacher" (shop-teacher)
02/03/2017 at 11:26, STARS: 1
Yes it did, and while it isn’t really showing so much in the picture, this one has a lot of rust on it. I bet some part of the chassis or suspension has collapsed from just. According to Fintail, the spring perches are a notorious rust problem for these.

Certainly possible. I’ve seen broken coil springs too. But where I live, rust isn’t a problem, so I have no idea where and how badly these cars rust, just that the internet says they do.
"AMGtech - now with more recalls!" (amgtech)
02/03/2017 at 11:54, STARS: 0
I always forget that this happens because where I live rust isn’t a problem at all. Grew up in the midwest though and saw plenty of rust there, but I never even sat in a Mercedes when I lived there so I don’t think of them as having rust problems.

02/03/2017 at 12:01, STARS: 0
They rust really badly. You rarely see them around here anymore. It’s not really showing on the pic, but this one has a lot of rust around all the edges.
