!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

Poverty trim Impreza with a 1.8 and a 5 speed. No auto offered.

There was also a Legacy Brighton which was similarly equipped but with the 2.5.

Except in Japan where the Brighton 220 was a high trim level and replaced the TZ model.

These are perfect for JDM swaps. This one is OBDII though, so two years earlier is more better.

Can you explain to me what a JDM swap would entail?

Lightest models of those Subarus out there. No power anything. Perfect for making race cars.

Before 1997 or so, the Legacy Brighton was a 2.2

I nearly bought a 95 Legacy Brighton wagon in 1998. It woulda been so much better than the Saturn...

I found one on CL a while ago and thought that the people were joking because they were selling it in Brighton MA. I was amazed when people on here were like, ‘yep, thats a real thing’

In NY at least, if the car is OBDI there is no emission inspection. So you can put ANY motor in, it doesn’t matter... just needs to pass safety inspection; lights, brakes work, etc.

So you can get a OBDI subie, and buy a JDM front clip. The front clip is essentially the entire front half of the car from Japan: The entire front of the body, engine, trans, center diff, axles, wiring, dash, etc. You can get one from an early WRX or STi not sold in the US.

Because Subarus are like legos, you then unbolt the japanese stuff, unbolt the american stuff, and place the japanese stuff in the american car, and throw everything else out.

BOOM. You know have a V1/2 STI.

I still keep this in the back of my head for the future, I really loved my 2.5RS coupe.

If you think a 1.8 is still too much, there is always the Impreza 1.6 (That’s about 95 horsepower when new) I had one until last year.

It was a ‘98 red wagon, also base a model. Didn’t even have roof rails, still but came with the 2-speed transfer box they all seem to have. And which is very handy for going uphill and pulling people out of ditches

I wish I had bought a Subaru back in the day as well.

But I was in love with a PT Cruiser.

In Maine we don’t even know what emissions testing is.

Yikes, our Kia Soul has a dinky 1.6 I can’t imagine it in a boxer variant and with 20 years older tech and going to all 4 wheels. That thing must have turned dead dinosaurs into quite a racket without much forward progress.

Fuel economy was all right for that kinda car (8-8,5l/100 km, don’t know how much that is in freedom), but yeah, you’re never in a hurry in a car like that.

Edit: Forgot to add the small boxers are VERY smooth engines. At idle or once you’re at cruising speed you hardly notice it’s running. Weird little car that was

One of my friends drove all the way to New Mexico via Florida from Chicago to pick one up and drive it back. (the Florida stop was to pick up a 6 speed because of course you need that too)
