I was in the car with two of my pals last weekend. The driver is a mild car enthusiast, myself and my other friend are hardened enthusiasts. We’re driving along and my pal in the passenger seat noticed the driver using cruise control. Both of us started giving him shit about it because that’s what we do.

Kinja'd!!!

I don’t like the idea of cruise control, I literally never use it. I remember using it once on my first car to see if it works but if my foot needs a rest that bad, I will just stop. Maybe that is why I have racked up so many tickets over the years.

We asked some of our other friends about it, and it was pretty much 50/50. However, the people that said that they use cruise control out of my small biased/useless sample, are effectively some of the worst drivers that I know.

So what say Oppo? Are you pro, con, or indifferent to CC.

cruise control is great for cruising. highway miles are always boring, so anything to alleviate the tediousness the better

Pro CC.

1) it stops me from speeding. I have a lead foot, using CC allows me to avoid the temptation by just not having my foot on the pedal

2) it gives me a nice constant cruising speed. Nothing aggravates me more than passing the same car 14 times because they cannot maintain a constant speed. If they were using CC as well, it wouldn’t be happening.

3) it saves me gas. see point 1 as to why.

pro. very pro. set the speedo to 69 and not have to worry if my foot floated down into getting pulled over territory. It let me push the point where I’d get a ticket closer. Also the car can keep a speed better than I could, and not having to worry about my speed means I can focus on the traffic around me. (not heavy traffic, no CC in heavy traffic)

I use it all the time. 34 years old. 1 ticket ever (thought the speed limit was 10mph higher than it actually turned out to be.)

I mean why wouldn’t you use it? There’s nothing fun happening in any situation where i’d consider using it.

How can you not be in favor of cruise control? People who don’t use it on the highway annoy the crap out of me. I come up behind you with my cruise on, move over to pass, then you speed up, then slow down, then speed up.

Maddening.

Pro, I use it all the time. I hate when people on the highway vary their speed a lot. They go from 65-75, how hard is it to maintain a constant speed. I just set it at 8 over and forget it, I’m not paying less attention to my surroundings, maintaining a constant speed is one less thing I have to think about.

I’m not your average user because I use hand controls. However, I do like to use it on long highway trips. It gives my wrist a rest and allows me to shift positions more easily, thereby staying fresh. It also seems to help with mpg.

Can’t prove my driving ability to you, though. So take that for what it’s worth. :)

USE IT! Nothing is more irritating to me than passing the same car for the 10th time because they refuse to use it and go a constant speed.

I also use it on city streets, its so easy to set and cancel that I don’t see a reason not to.

p.s. my wife and I keep a 8.5x11 in each of our glove compartments that reads “use cruise or follow me” for when I pass you for the 10th time.

Love it. First car didnt have it. I just wish it was smart enough to re engage after I downshift to 5th for a hill. Oh well, 2 overdrives is where it’s at when the speed limit is 80.

I fantasize about PIT maneuvers when people around me aren’t using it. Even if their speed varies by 2 mph, it’s seriously annoying.

I use it occasionally on long drives. When I used to drive from southern Oregon to Seattle and back, I’d be on a long 100 mile stretch of nothing, but I only used cruise control when I wanted to give my foot a break or to stretch it.

OMG! I love CC Set the car to 71 for everything. I mean unless I am out to drive, most of the time I commute or am taking long drives and love to be able to to stay at a constant speed. Also constant speed = better mpg.

I hate those people that constantly drift between 65 and 70. It is annoying and hard to follow/pass. Just pic a speed and fucking stay there. THen everyone can do that.

It helps I have enough tq to stay in 6th and CC and go up a grade with no issue. If it is heavy traffic then you can’t use CC because that wouldn’t be safe, but most freeway time it is safer and easier.

I use it all the time, even on empty 40 mph suburban roads. It’s a must for low-input highway cruising in a modern car.

Years ago when I had a W210, CC was inoperable when the car suffered a weird easily fixed electrical fault, but I was hours from home and hours away from any place that would stock the part. It was quite irritating driving it back home to be repaired.

I don’t use it in town, but I live in a small city of 40000 in the middle of nowhere. I do use it all the time on highways unless bad conditions.

Not using it yourself is one thing, but what could you possibly find about it that was worth giving someone shit about? How can you fundamentally object to using cruise control?

If somebody tried to give me crap about using the cruise control while I was driving they would very quickly find themselves walking.

Also, on any given trip when I have my cruise set at 80 there’ll be the guy that rockets by at 85, then moves right 20 seconds later and slows to 70. Repeat that 20 times and yeah, it gets annoying for other road users.

I use it when I can, which mostly highways. Playing around with the throttle is much more fun when turning or corner-carving anyway.

One neat thing about cruise control is that if you use it in a car that you’re unfamiliar with, you can set it and LIGHTLY rest your foot on the accelerator to feel how it behaves while going up and down hills. It’s kind of like “training wheels” that help you get a really good sense of what it takes to maintain a steady speed.

I use and love cruise control on pretty much any highway drive where there isn’t stop and go traffic. It really irks me that others vary their speed so much when there is little or no reason to. Back when I didn’t use CC I got a lot of speeding tickets. Enough to lose my license for 30 days and had to take a safety class before I could get it back... It also cuts down on driver fatigue on really long trips, lets me stay focused on the road and traffic around me and not worry as much about my speed because I know what it is.

I’m strongly against cruise control. However, sometimes I will use cruise control on flat, open terrain as a minimum speed (Limit 75 mph = Set to 73 mph) and I’ll drive over that and know that if I feel it engage then I need to take a break because I’m either distracted or drowsy. But even then I need to be fairly alone on the road and have nothing about the drive to keep me engaged.

You should get out of the left lane when you aren’t passing someone for a reasonable distance no matter who else is around. I strongly believe this. Don’t camp in the left lane, even alone.

To the other extreme, don’t be like a close friend who cuts to the right after every single pass - it drives me equally crazy. There can be a reasonable amount of “nobody’s on my ass and I’m going to pass that next car in a bit”, but no camping!

Funny, in the hills it’s obvious who’s using cruise control since they consistently slow down going up the hill and speed up going down as a bit of preemptive throttle control fixes that.

You can still do that with cruise on, I do...I kinda have to usually involving pre-kicking down a gear. The cruiser doesn’t run away on the downhill on account of its brick like shape, but uphills you have to be ready for.

that said, i DO use it when 1) my leg/foot gets tired on a long drive 2) i’m testing the system function, or 3) i’m changing my pants.

Kinja'd!!! "bhtooefr" (bhtooefr)
02/02/2017 at 18:25, STARS: 0

I use it all the freaking time, even in just normal around town driving.

It means I hold a consistent speed, which nobody really does without cruise, even if they think they do, it reduces stress, it’s more comfortable. And, I’ve found that driving a Miata without cruise for a long period of time is actually painful for me (I’m really too big for a Miata, but fuck it, I fit anyway).

Now, there are a few scenarios in which I don’t use it. Those basically boil down to...

I’m accelerating or decelerating. The Miata’s cruise control is pretty imprecise in setting speed using the cruise control, so I do it by foot. The Prius is fine in setting it during acceleration, but sometimes I want to use more or less throttle than it does... but deceleration will actually use regenerative braking and engine braking to drag the speed down, which I don’t want most of the time (and the cruise control set speed notification covers up the Hybrid System Indicator, so I have to keep cancelling the notifications to see if it’s going into regen), I just want it to coast into the new set point.

I’m on steep hills. The Miata will actually run out of engine vacuum climbing a hill, and start losing speed, so I have to add pedal manually. The Prius will cycle between wide open throttle to climb, and maximum engine braking to descend, when in hilly terrain, so it’s more efficient to just drive it by foot, losing speed at the crest, gaining it at the base, and avoiding WOT or engine braking altogether.

I’m following someone. Then, I usually drive by foot, and let them set the pace. (No radar cruise.)

For some reason, I want constant power, instead of constant speed. The most common example of this is a short low-speed freeway leg on my commute, where I can’t quite hold 60 (in a 55) without firing up the engine on my Prius... so I’ll instead aim for the maximum electric power with the pedal. But then, I’ve found that watching the Hybrid System Indicator, and nudging the set point down to 59 right before it fires up the engine works pretty well, too (then I cancel it right before the power demand rises to the point that it’d fire up the engine, and that’s when I’m getting off for my exit and want to start braking), and that’s what I’ve been doing lately.

Why not? You get a more constant speed, which means marginally better fuel economy. And like you said easier to stay under the limit. I can agree with the ergonomic aspect not being much help. In my Integra there’s no where else to comfortably keep my foot except underneath the gas. Which is bad since you have to remove your foot before you can brake.

I drive 30-40k miles a year. Often 8-12 hour trips. I use it all the time. I once got a Kia Rio or something as a rental without cruise for a 12 hour trip. I thought I was gonna die.

Sometimes car enthusiasts take it way too far.

“What?! You mean you DON’T want to sit there for hours on end with your foot locked in the same position against the gas pedal?! And you dare say that you ‘like cars.’”

Anything over an hour I’ll use it. But for the last 10 years my DD hasn’t had it. Even my 2005 equinox doesn’t have it. I don’t use it because I don’t have it.

Our van has it, so when we cruise on the highway at 75 I’ll set it.

I usually just keep with the flow of traffic, or just quicker than it.

Love CC. Lots of speed cameras here + low speed limits. And in Australia we have to do what the sign says - none of that “it says 60 so I can do 80". Computers are better at maintaining a consistent speed than humans, so I’d rather my CC do it. Less time watching the speedo means more attention to the road.

Also for times like this , 10+ hours on straight roads doing consistent speeds.

^ Tell me you wouldn’t!?

I feel like CC haters assume everyone who uses it just turns it on, shuts their eyes, takes their hands off the wheel and assumes the car will do the rest. If you do that you’re an idiot, CC or not. You’re still driving the car , you just don’t need to operate one of the pedals.

My MR2 doesn’t have it, I miss it dearly.

I am curious: do you just not prefer to use it, or are you conceptually against it? And if the latter, why?

I’ll write a post about it as soon as I can since it’s a larger philosophy. But yes, I don’t like the concept of disengaging the driver and not having the car do something to avoid an incident. I know all of you are fine with watching the road, but how comfortable are you knowing that all those drivers have their cars set to stay one speed no matter if they are drowsy, eating, messing with the touchscreen, facing the passenger as they talk to them...

That is scary to me, and it only takes one moment to end up in a bad situation. Doesn’t matter if you have been accident free for 30 years and 700,000 miles. You don’t grow immunity.

completely agree - I regularly use cruise control as a speed limiter and help with fuel mileage. I understand the other side - “you need to be paying attention!”, but I don’t think they are mutually exclusive.

It’s such a hassle though. It only works if there is actually a car in front of you. If you’ve got clear road ahead of you it cites an “external distronic malfuction” in the message center every 1000 yards because if it doesn’t detect another vehicle, it gets scared and freaks out because it thinks it MUST be malfunctioning because how can there POSSIBLY not be any other cars on the road, and better-safe-than-sorry-failsafe I guess?

If you can keep far enough off the bumper of the guy in front of you, it will maybe stay active in 20% of cases. It isn’t the rain, it’s the spray coming at an upward angle being kicked up by the guy ahead of you. But yea, if the emitter gets wet, the whole system goes inoperative until you stop and dry off the sensor under the hood. And when the system turns off, it’s off. It doesn’t revert to normal cruise control function with a warning, you just don’t have cruise control anymore.

Gen 1 has automatic braking, but it’s limited to like 25% at maximum. That is to say, even if a collision is imminent, it will only sound an alarm for the driver to take over.

I noticed this in our Sienna (2011)... Toyota thing? If it hits a hill it’ll stay in high gear until it gets well below the set speed, kick down and accelerate hard until a little over set speed and then coast back and make a second try at holding the set speed in high gear.
