The pause is because you have to wait for the current character to time out before you can use the same key again. At least, that’s how my Nokia was.

Up until about a month ago, I had a flip-phone for work. My T9 skills are still sharp, but there was one problem. It guessed at a lot of things when it didn’t know any words for a combination of keys.
