Kinja'd!!!

Me and a co-worker took a company Colorado 4x4 on an adventure yesterday as we tried to follow powerline trails to get to a remote site.

As it turned out, all it took was a phone call to the right person to get the gate key to an access road. In an attempt to save a half an hour we wasted an hour.

But going through the locked gate with a key was the boring way!

First, we found that the stock truck has pretty good articulation, and gets through mud well on the street tires. When we decided that we wouldn’t make it past a particularly large rock, it did well returning the way it came.

But returning through a creek ford location we discovered that the front break-over approach angle was not great with the stock bumper and air dam. Fortunately some digging resolved that problem, because backing up to resolve it was going to be no fun.

Moral of the story: I am having fun at work if I have to get out of the vehicle to spot for the driver.

I think you mean approach angle, there is no “front break over angle”. Sounds like fun though, who doesn’t like wasting time on a dirt road?

Air dam seems simple enough to remove.

Calling it a dirt road would be giving it too much credit. Really was a glorified four-wheeler trail. The power company must run highly modified trucks.

Yes, but a) it’s a company lease vehicle, and 2) no tools to remove it with. I’m sure this is why the Z71 (or whatever) Colorado has a different front bumper.

I’ve seen those before. It think that it would have been too wide for the ford in particular, and maybe not fit in a couple of other spots, which is why I am now wondering what they would do if they need to repair and not just inspect.

They probably have a similar set up on a F450 or something a little smaller.

I think the Colorado looks particularly good in steel wheel work truck trim. I’m not surprised the air damn was a problem, they’re REALLY low.
