Kinja'd!!!

I just read insurance in the US was $907.38 annually in 2014. Annually?! They must mean bi-annually right, or am I crazy? Around the same period of time the average household spent nearly $2,000 a year on gasoline. I’m not getting any good results with surface searches so maybe you all can help me out.

I DO NOT want all your insurance and coverage information. I just want to know what you think the average annual car insurance premium would be around.

Maybe we can talk about coverage another time. Does anyone on Oppo work with car insurance for a living? I feel like insurance is the least talked about portion of autodom even though it’s more impactful on our lives than getting behind the wheel.

As a 22yo (higher risk) I pay $60/mo for 1 car for a more or less average plan.

Late model E-class is around $1500/year for full more than minimum coverage, fintail is on a Hagerty policy that I think is $135/year. I am within spitting distance of “the hill” and have a good driving record.

We actually do pay about that annually, maybe a bit more, for insurance on my wife’s car and my truck. Probably more like $2500/year on gas, because we like to drive around aimlessly on the weekends, and that’s usually in my truck.

6 months of coverage for two 22-yr old vehicles costs me around $900. Aside from one windshield replacement, I haven’t had to make any claims.

$2000/yr for gas sounds about right.

$60 at most. My coverages are the option above MA compulsory across the board but I opted for slightly higher deductibles.

~$1000/year doesn’t shock me at all. I think a lot of people just buy the minimum they need to register their car. And while I don’t know your demographics, insurance for young men is extremely expensive, which means that as a whole Oppo may have a warped perception of what insurance costs.

I know you didn’t ask for it, but $2400 a year for insurance. 27, lots of tickets and Michigan is the most expensive state. Also close to $5k a year for gas .... I drive too much.

48yo male, no tickets, no accidents. ~$1200/yr on better than full coverage insurance for my 2017 boostang. I’m also spending ~$1300/yr on premium fuel.

Insurance is sticky, since the rates vary by age/location/history/etc...

$95 a month for Allstate for 2 vehicles and only collision comp, no accidents, tickets, etc. Seems high, but not sure if any other place will be cheaper and the process of getting another insureance, canceling the current one might be a headache.

$800 a year for insurance on 2 cars. My 3rd car is insured by work. Gas.. For work I use about 7-8 thousand dollars of fuel a year (55k miles @ 16mpg x $2.10ish a gallon) but our family cars combined probably only cost about $1000-1300 (11000 miles @ 19 mpg x $2.10ish a gallon) in fuel roughly.

For my wife and I, it’s above that. - about $138/mo. We have liability/uninsured/comp/collision/rental/med pay. And not state minimum limits either. And that’s after a crash.

Fuel costs are higher though - 2000 miles a month at 27 mpg with gas at $2.25/gallon puts us around 167/mo for gas.

$1550 - two cars, higher liability limits, physical damage both vehicles, relatively clean records.

Yay “no fault”, were everyone pays for it!

I should clarify that I used to pay $960 a year until they found out about 4 tickets at once. And to be more clear, I lie to them and say I live up north with my mom. Price checked Detroit and it would easily be $500 a month.

Browndogwelding’s Detroit story makes a lot of sense after you figure that out.

Our outlook on car insurance isn’t warped. We don’t talk about it a lot because we know its expensive! lol

Better get comfortable Wobbles the Mind, you live in a state that that has traffic like the Indy 500 but the drivers are ill-trained at driving? You live in a state that has insurance factors that look at anything other than a Toyota Prius as a Formula 1 car? How many car insurance companies exist where you live?

If you answered yes to at least one of the 2 first first questions, then you’re policy may be pricey. You can also thank our great grandfathers for driving like idiots for making any young guys now pay more for insurance since apparently we can’t go to 50ft in a car to buy a bottle of water without endangering every pedestrian and possibly getting every road violation we have a law for. (although I wonder why John Force’s 2 daughters don’t also pay more)
