They cost significantly less money for no good reason.

Because less chassis rigidity which means less race car

An overly-glorified perception of lack of responsibilities?

Because back then the styling was done for the two-door and the four-door was an afterthought and often looked weird or awkward compared to the two-door. Just look at this thing. Sure, you can have fun with it but it ain’t no beauty queen.

I’ll make an exception to the Charger Hellcat. I’d take one of those over a Challenger Hellcat.

Unless you’re shopping for an E9X M3, the E90 seems to hold its value more than the E92.

Indeed, I like my 4 door car, examples of which can be had for a fraction of the price of a coupe or cabrio:

At one time, wagons were just as disregarded, but that changed a while back.

When I was growing up only old people drove sedans. Both of my parents had 2 doors until my mom switched to a SUV in early 2000's.

As to the original question, at this point these cars are most likely not someone primary means of transportation so practicality is pretty much a non-issue.

A four door means you have responsibilities and you need to be practical, whereas a coupe says free and unencumbered. Me? My DD is a minivan, so I know all about the hate for vehicles that are practical and affordable.

about the only somewhat “cool” 4 doors were the 56/57 Chevy Bel Air 4dr hardtops. it was about as close to the 2 door in styling.

I think it may be stemming from the “giving up speed for practicality” mindset.

Because short wheelbases are just better.

I like my Galant, but I’d love it if it was a Talon, or Eclipse. Why, because the Galant is 8 inches longer, 150lbs heavier, and has an extra two doors that I never use.

Pfah, four doors. Why, I’d never.

Okay, in non-joking mode, some of the other remarks about the styling choice make sense, but that didn’t consistently apply to FoMoCo products. Plenty of FERDs are on the same pan with the same final pillar position, etc. etc. so it doesn’t really matter - then again you have wacky things like the ‘63-1/2 Galaxies with the fastback. Anyway, with FERDs and Mopars not having run away price-wise there are a lot of great choices out there.

More to the “but styling”, there are also models that *were* distinct, but also got special restyles to make the styling better for the four door. Like the Extended Deck Cadillacs.

A lot of two-doors back in the day had nearly the same pan and the same wheelbase, though. Ford was particularly guilty of this.

The viscious cycle of car collectibility. People desire what is rare and valued highly, hence why top tier models hold their value better as well as appreciating to insane heights. Four doors are seen as consumer models, whereas two doors are “Sporty”. Given that classic cars are purchased for their nostalgia factor rather than for competitive features admittedly stupid distinctions like this are the entire motivators for value. Realistically, people should not desire classic cars at all because they are old and outdated. It just depends on where you draw the line.

Personally, I want the two door.

Bingo. My mom absolutely refused to drive anything with four doors, because four-door cars were ugly. It wasn’t until I was in high school and she became a realtor, that she relented and got a sedan.

True. But for something like the 62 Caddy above. I would say the difference between a 2 door and 4 door is minimal at best.

Four doors = obligation.

People tend not to like being on the “ownership / deliverable” side of an obligation.
