Gizmodo has been telling us about a Danish wind turbine which has been producing record amounts of electricity. It’s big. It’s a Vestas V-164 and rises 220m or lots of feet over the North Sea. The rotor diameter is 164m which is also really big. Given enough wind it produces 9 MW.

For all that, and surprisingly, it’ll take two of them running at max power to run just one of these, a Channel Tunnel Eurostar train.:

Why can’t they just tie a string to the train, and connect the other end to the windmill?

I’m not an eco-nut by any means, but solar and wind electricity generation still fascinates me....yes, I know the oil companies rule things, but I wish we switched over to more solar and wind power here in North America - not because, as I said, I’m an ‘eco-mentalist’ as Jeremy would say, but just because there is a legitimate abundance of both solar and wind energy to go around!

Hate to see that power bill. Or be something on the recieving end of that tip. Even though these things only run at 10 or so RPM, 80m blades mean like a 200MPH tip speed.

Like the SF cable cars, but updated?

How much power is that in terms of gerbil wheels?

I wish the turbines I worked on were that big... My facility only makes on-shore turbines.

What would happen when the string got wound all the way up?

Solar cost is dropping drastically. I think the big breakthrough will be when the SolarCity roofs get to the point where they are close enough in price to a “regular” roof to justify the upgrade. I think we’ll see mass household level adoption at that point.

Ah very clever! But you see, there is a second strong tied to another windmill at the other end of the track!! Science!!

Aren’t offshore wind platforms one of the most efficient electrical generators? Can you imagine if the US lined its main coasts with them? On top of the abundance of electricity, think of all the jobs it would create and the shorelines would look like those old-timey futuristic cityscapes!

Texas has more wind power generating capacity than any other state, in fact produces more electricity from wind than coal. The problem with wind power is you need vast quantities of land to make room for it. Which is ok when your state is huge and filled with nothing, but not so useful when it’s not huge and filled with lots of other stuff already.
