Kinja'd!!!

Why use spray paint to prevent rust? temporary I hope use a 2k epoxy people! they even sell it in spray cans if you don’t have a cheap paint gun or compressor.

Why do all that welding and then rivet that aluminum in?

Why flux core? for the love of welding why weld thin sheet metal with flux core?!

Your avatar seems very appropriate right now.

I was actually just researching the flux core thing this morning, mainly because I already have one, and even though my welder is gas compatible, the tank deposit, fill, and the required regulators are just more than I want to pay right now. I came to the conclusion that if you’re doing visible panels, or panels that you want to look really nice, suck it up and get the MIG. I’m just doing floor pan patches that will be covered in lots of paint, undercoating, and carpet however, so I’m going to give flux core a shot.

To that point, making properly fitting patch panels is a bigger deal than what wire you use. Janky floor pan repairs done with a MIG will still look like a butcher job.

The spray paint is Rustoleum rust paint, and it’s *probably* temporary, all of those parts were also sealed with PL Premium adhesive.

I riveted the aluminum in because I ran out of big pieces of steel, I had it lying around, that’s an area that get’s a lot of water thrown at it, and aluminum doesn’t rust so I thought that would be better.

Flux core because the cheap welder I had didn’t work well when we hooked the gas up to it, and the flux core worked well for me anyway.

Also, this is the first car I’ve ever done, and I don’t claim to be an expert or a pro, I just wanted to drive it :)

The floors were actually MIG’d on my car, and yeah, they look janky because I was just learning how to weld. But I seriously don’t care, this car is so much fun to drive. What you also can’t see in the video is how much hail damage it has, so realistically, this car will never be fully restored on my dollar, haha!

Alex, I wasn’t calling your repairs janky! Quite the opposite, I think you did a fine job and your patch panels look to fit pretty well! Welding the aluminum to steel would probably not have been possible given your equipment.

By “janky” I am talking about the kind of repairs where somebody drops a replacement panel in without trimming it at all, leading to 3-4" overhangs. Then they MIG it in place.

I was genuinely impressed that you were able to save it at all. That car was ROUGH!

I was seriously impressed at the work you did. I am going to be a wussy man and wait till I have cash to pay someone. I was just surprised, that car looked way better than mine on the outside but my car isn’t completely rotted like that was.

oh good I was afraid that aluminum and spray paint was permanent and it made no sense since you were doing everything so well.

I have seen two episodes and both were good and enjoyable and I like both cars! best of luck with the cars!

I am not saying its terrible but a mig is far and away the best option. flux core welding can cause lots of grinding to be needed and it runs hotter and could cause much more problems with burn through especially on thin sheet metal. I think as long as one knows this and makes sure to do good welds and try to do the best welds one can it should turn out well enough.

I would reccomend practicing on scrap s not to ruin the replacement panels.

I’m calling my own repairs janky, haha. But no, I didn’t do that, I had a lot of help from a few people who were also rebuilding cars at the time.

Thanks! Yeah, it was really disheartening to grind away a layer of bondo and have it be almost a half an inch, then realizing it was like that all the way around.

You’re exactly right, the flux core did cause some problems for me early on, but it actually creates a really strong weld, also. A lot of the time I wasn’t seam welding anyway, I was drilling holes and putting in plug welds, which reduced the chance of warping. I was also fortunate enough to have that spot welder that I used to make the tub, that thing was invaluable! I’m gonna buy a TIG soon.

I’m sure it was. Good on you though for refusing to be beaten. Most of people would’ve just called it a loss.
