I think a ‘90 would have outboard instead of inboard discs - can’t recall exactly. This does not have much import on things other than me contending such a concession is for smelly hippies.

What could possibly go wrong? 10/10 would buy.

I may be completely wrong, but I think XJSes had inboard throughout the entire run. At any rate, I think this would have inboard since the facelift happened in MY 92.

I mean, the antenna is already pre-broken, so there’s nothing left to break. Right?

It has the second generation of the suspension, but it seems that they waited on the outboard switch until facelift. At any rate, late ones *do* have outboard, I was just wrong on year.

1993 and later had the redesigned V12 which had far more reliable ignition/electrics, a GM 4L80E transmission, and outboard discs. It’s basically the only ones you’d want to buy.

Lies. Okay, let me clarify my half-joke response: Buttresses are life, I prefer some other aspects of the earlier type suspension and don’t mind the inboard discs, and CEI injection on the HEs isn’t a dealbreaker quite like still earlier systems. There is also not a whole lot wrong with TH350s.

except the rear lights on the facelifts are so... bland. :(

‘90 is a good year in my book. pre-facelift means the cooler rear lights and buttresses. plus the sport seats which only came in 89+. but, without the ridiculous motorized seatbelts that always break that i believe are only on ‘89s.

“some” of the rubber under the hood looks to have been replaced, which is ok. but it requires a full inspection under there. looks like an original fan (the yellow plastic). that is at risk of being brittle, disintigrating and putting holes in your radiator. the ac condenser looks rusted, so don’t expect cool air. also, the radio antenna should be down. so immeidate questions of electrical systems come into play.

go check it out. start her up. see/hear/smell how she runs. try every single electrical gizmo. watch the engine temp gauge like a hawk (it’s going to be difficult to see if it can hold temp when its this cold out). check the brittle-ness of the engine wiring harness. these often cook in the V, insulation degrades, it starts shorting, and problems ensue. put your hand in front of each exhaust pipe. you should feel completely rhythmic pulses in each. (its sometimes difficult to identify firing issues just by feeling or sensing in the cabin or while driving.)

last bit: check under all of the carpets for rust, including the trunk. including behind the spare tire where the gas tank is. then get on your back and with a flashlight look under the car at the suspension components, mounts and subframe. if you see any, just walk away. (actually, drive it around a bit first, to get a datapoint, then walk away.)

edit: this is only the start of a real inspection. but at this money, just wait, you’ll find the one you want.

this has inboards. they switched a year or two AFTER the facelift. there were many updates and changes that occurred along the production. i believe this was the first year they started using ford stalks and other bits.

this is not even the start of it. check out jaguarforums. good bunch of guys over there. there is A LOT to look for in a new purchase. especially from a lot and not an enthusiast. the two biggest “must do” maintenance items for these cars upon purchase. 1) refurb the distributor and rotor. 2) go through the fuse boxes, replace and or refurb everything, same with relays. then, every single ground point.
