Does anyone else feel like the shuffle works well for the test but isn’t really an accurate result because there are so many more variables in the real world that would cause the vehicle to not just harmlessly glance off the obstacle?
Not saying any of those are unsafe vehicles, just that there could be some design in there specifically to take advantage of the test.

I hate to be the naysayer, but the shuffle works because it may send the car into another obstacle. Ok, so maybe off a cliff is a bad example, but if it manages to glance off the small overlap and hit something else head-on, there’s a much larger area for energy dissipation (and the vehicle is already slower than before). On the other hand, if the vehicle stops and gets “hung up”, so to speak, on the small frontal overlap barrier, then the entire vehicle is coming to a halt in a very short amount of time with all the force being directed to one point, thus increasing the probability of internal injury. Shearing off the wheel and proceeding forwards as most of the safest vehicles here do is much better in the real world as it would put less stress on the safety cage and allow the auto-braking to stop the car rather than the obstacle itself. Besides, given that Volvo is applying this solution I’d say it has to be the best since they’ve never been in the party to take advantage of any crash test (since they keep inventing their own...)
