It looked like this:

Then I put the cheapest, shittiest Walmart brand oil into it and it ran like this:

I think its got a blown head gasket, but I also think the engine is salvageable

You might just luck out there - new gasket, coolant flush, cross fingers, sit back and enjoy a bottle of Yoo-Hoo.

Sure go ahead and spend 30 times what you spent on the car on bearings...

If you let the bottle sit, does it separate?

Really looks like you lucked out.

Cant get the spark plug wires out. When it overheated they fused to the head. I gotta buy some spark plug wire pullers

On a related note, this is gasoline.

Very old (not sure exact age), mixed gasoline.

$30? That’d be nice.

When it’s that cheap it’s hard to go wrong fixing it up a little, anyway. And what’s the point in doing half a job?

Now I doubt if you could start a fire with it.

You sure it’s a blown headgasket? Not trying to be contrarian, just wondering.

From what the previous owner told me what happened also given what I’m seeing I’m assuming so. Why? What do you think?

You might want to consider more gaskets and the piston rings at the same time. Probably also water pump.

But, components were degraded rather than replaced. If you want to molecularly engineer the old gas to get it back up to having a practical use, then you can call it ship of theseus.

Still, $1001 isn’t bad and all that engine work will keep purple-ing along for awhile.

I meant to put this video in the original post, but I got a visual of the X-90's exhaust too. It smokes really bad and has a pretty obvious exhaust leak. Its burning somethin, I assume milkshake.

I don’t know if the process has to active via an external force for you to consider the molecules “replaced”, at least for the sake of argument. More of a question of how many normal eight-chain or similar hydrocarbons have to be replaced with fancy breakdown aromatics and ketones and IDEFK for it to stop being gasoline - at what point is it no longer gas? Actually, it’s also sort of a Zeno thing as well.

All depends how long it was driven like that. I took a 1998 Malibu with a bad headgasket drove it 15 miles home, did gaskets and an oil change on it and it was good for another 60K, afterall it was only a GM 3.1L those only last so long lol.

For SoT it would have to be, as the object in question must be in the form of the original but with new components. In this case it’s something becoming something else through degradation.

As far as your rephrasing goes, dunno but if I was in a technical mood I’d say 1 and if I was actively interacting with it every day I’d say idgaf and continue calling it gas.

Possible decay thresholds for no-longer-gas might be “will no longer run in carbureted engine” or something more esoteric like a >x% change in constituents with normal gasoline evaporative point. Both related, of course - if it is no longer a self-gasifying oil, it has betrayed its purpose *and name*.

Definitely do a compression test, that doesn’t look much like a blown head gasket. Maybe a leaking one, but not blown. There are also kits you can get that test for exhaust gases in the coolant.
