Kinja'd!!!

“In an age when space flight has come to seem almost routine, it is easy to overlook the dangers of travel by rocket, and the difficulties of navigating the fierce outer atmosphere of the Earth. These astronauts knew the dangers, and they faced them willingly, knowing they had a high and noble purpose in life. Because of their courage and daring and idealism, we will miss them all the more.”

- George W. Bush

I did not realize the anniversary was today. Growing up, I had a picture of the space shuttle Columbia on my wall. I was almost 13 at the time and remember exactly where I was when I heard about the disaster.

There have been very few events where every TV which is turned on is watching the same thing. This was one of them.

Our teacher had one of the carts with a TV and VCR. When he heard what was happening, he turned it on and all the kids from nearby classrooms jammed into ours to watch the events unfold.

As someone who watched the Challenger explode from my elementary school 50 miles away, this strikes a chord with me.

Yeah. This is the last one in the US space program’s dark week. Apollo 1, Challenger, and Columbia anniversaries are only separated by a few days. I was 18 when the Columbia disaster occurred and remember watching it live on TV as it played out.

Are you referring to Challenger? Columbia broke up on re-entry on a Saturday, at time when the shuttle missions had become a bit more routine and were no longer headline news. Unfortunately this put the program back on the front page for the wrong reasons. (Challenger anniversary was Jan 28).

The hardest part — even as a second-grader — was watching all the teachers struggle to get us back inside and gloss over the fact that they just watched a disaster, but couldn’t freak out about it. I know it wasn’t 9/11, but at that point in time it was about the scariest thing we could imagine (except nuclear war with Russia, which was still A Thing back then...and will be again soon!)

I was in 6th grade when 9/11 happened, and since I was living in Arizona at the time, both towers had fallen by the time school had started. I remember my principal crying giving the morning announcements as apparently her brother worked in the WTC and couldn’t get in touch with him and thought the worst.

That will teach me to pay closer attention. I was thinking of Challenger.
