Kinja'd!!!

So anyway. I’m just popping in to recommend a book I read a few years ago and I’m looking for now.

It’s called “Unpublished Activities of World War ll.” The title is kind of mis-leading though. It’s an autobiography of a guy in WW ll who for the first half of the book works at a shipyard (Newsport News) as a machinist. Which is awesome, not only does he drop some mad gear head knowledge about both allied and axis ships along with shipbuilding in general, but later when he joins the Army and goes to Europe he still has a strong knowledge and understanding of all the machines used in the war and their real world implementation. Along with just general batshit crazy stuff like when Churchill got on a raft in the middle of the Rhine river with a bunch of generals and the Germans started shelling him. Anyway there’s a bunch of crazy stories whether dramatic, humorous, or just interesting that you don’t typically hear in most historic literature.

So whether you’re a gear head, amateur historian, or just want something entertaining to read I’d give this book a 9.99/10. Although I’ll admit the beginning when he’s working at the shipyard can be kind of a slow read at times.

Link to buy it off amazon. Which I’ll use myself If I can’t find it.

I drove past Newport News Shipbuilding a few months ago. It’s huge.

This is where I grew up. Norfolk (VA) is on the left, Portsmouth on the right. At the top are some of the shipyards, and there were always cargo ships, destroyers, command ships, etc. up in the dry docks. At the top right is the South Branch of the Elizabeth River, which leads to the Norfolk Naval Shipyard and many other shipyards down that way. We used to motorboat down that branch past all the ships, including subs and other mothballed missile frigates. The Norfolk Naval Base and Naval Air Station were close by, and Newport News Shipbuilding was over on the Peninsula. Driving by, you could see the remarkably big gantry cranes they use to move the giant ship sections. Oceana NAS was close by, and seeing F-14, F-18s and Hawkeyes was a daily occurrence. I really miss living there, being close to the water, seeing all the international shipping. That’s the USS Wisconsin over on the left. It’s a museum ship now. It’s interesting to compare the size of the Wisconsin and the Truman . (Hi Res photo here )
