It’s a trade in, I’ve seen quite a few people in the PNW who bought them and ditched them due to it not living up to expectations

In what ways are they not living up to expectations?

600 miles is not a lot of used that is for sure, but it’s still used. Let’s not kid ourselves here

I’d assume either the ride is too hard or like the Nissan GT-R, it’s just a fast computer.

My dad bought is 2013 BRZ in May 2014 with 800 mi on it. It had been purchased from a dealer in January 2014 and was back on a lot by February. Our theory is the 1st owner got caught in a snowstorm and scared the shit out of themselves.

Everything I’ve heard is that the suspension is very, very harsh. After initial glowing reveiws on tracks and well-maintained roads, both MT and C&D have seemingly 180'd on it in recent tests saying it is very hard to live with. So basically it is track toy. My guess is that given that it is a 5-door hatch people are buying them thinking they are both fun and practical for a DD but can’t get over the ride. I haven’t driven one yet, but given that the ST ride is already a bit on the firm side (compared to, say a GTI that has an almost BMW-like uncanny ability to corner well without crashing over every bump), I wouldn’t be surprised if this thing feels like a logging truck to commute in. Also, the shifter apparently sucks.

Not that fast or fun for the hype and price. The two people I know who traded then back (both with less than 1000 miles) were coming from fairly modified cars. Both had similar comments, the actual performance is underwhelming and it’s just not that rewarding to drive hard.

I spent all day Saturday at the track doing a Club Trial (time trial event with other cars, but you can only pass on the straights after getting a point-by). I drive a 2014 BRZ and the two cars with the times closest to mine (and thereby sent out on the track before/after me) were a Focus RS and a Spec Miata.

Every time I was behind the RS, I’d sneak up to him through the corners and he’d pull a (smaller than expected) gap on the straights. Our times were close enough that it would take 3-4 laps for me to get him to let me pass (the 20min sessions gave us 8-10 flying laps at speed). The RS never gave me a point by, instead I’d wait for him to understeer off the course as my higher corning speeds pressured him to continually increase his cornering speeds until he flew off the track and went rallying.

The RS is a fast hot hatch, but it isn’t a sportscar. It is also very expensive and not a great daily driver. They were really cool because they were the hot new thing, but objectively they fill a very niche roll for a select group of people.

Our local Ford dealer had a used one as well for about a day. Either they sold it that quickly or they did a dealer trade.

That makes sense, and if you’re going to spend 50k on a track toy, there are probably better options.

This dealer is about 5 miles from my house and I saw a grey RS in a parking lot a few weeks ago. I wonder if this is the same one.

That’s interesting they said the same thing, I wonder if the value of these will plummet if it really is that hard to live with.

I’ve yet to drive one myself, but in talking to an owner at autocross and reading some of these types of articles, it seems that it sort of suffers from the same situation the GTR does. It has an extremely high performance envelope, but doesn’t really speak to you.

And they came from really different platforms too. One owned a turbo s2000 and the other an STi hatch.

I think they both went in hoping to buy a car off the showroom floor that they wouldn’t have to sink thousands into parts to meet their desires. Didn’t work out that way.

Did they test drive them first or just buy them? Although, it’s really hard to tell how easy it will be to live with a car based on a 10 mile drive.

I mean I think the performance lives up to realistic expectations(disclaimer: have not driven one so I can’t speak personally), it was just so, so overhyped. I thought it would be a better Focus ST with more driver aides and I’m pretty sure that’s what we got

This development thread kinda backs up what you’re saying. It’s a long read, but in short it suffers on the track from compromises made for reduced cost and to make it easier to live with on the road. (Although it looks like those compromises haven’t helped much for day to day driving anyway). I’d still love to drive one. It sounds like a riot in small doses.

Sounds like they should’ve just gotten a 1M, don’t like it? Put 10k on it and sell it for the same damn price. I drove a 1M and it lives up to the hype, although I might be biased.

Yes, but I think most were expecting it to be faster. Whether we’re talking road course or straight line, it’s just not $45k fast

To be fair those are the cream of the crop as far as sub-50k-ish driver’s cars go. Also the Fiesta is the only one that could actually make a 1-car stable if you ever need to drive more than one other person or carry anything at all bigger than a suitcase, and the only one that isn’t a purpose-built sports car from the ground up.

I don’t know about that actually.

In this previously cited comparo(lap times if you scroll all the way down) I can’t really find anything faster than it that’s cheaper besides that Camaro V6 1LE.

My guess is. The owner of the dealership, a rotund, balding 60 year old man, took it as a personal car, but after about a week he decided it was too hard to get into, harsh riding, and manual for him. So he put it back on the lot, and took another F-150 Platium.

while I see your point, I’m leaning towards nah. Dealer principal could easily demo the car so they wouldn’t have to turn around and sell it as used

Looking at the numbers more, it falls exactly where it should price-wise(again, the Camaro seems to be the best performance bargain in the test, but only by a bit). I think people expected it would be made from unicorn farts and magic but at the end of the day it’s a $40,000 dollar car trying to be good at lots of things.

Was just at a Ford dealership yesterday (test driving a Fusion Sport) and they had a white one. Looked great but it’s sticker was the same as the Edge Sport next to it (mpg too lol). I can imagine if it isn’t perfect in the mind of who bought it (which it was hyped to hell), they’d be bringing it back for something else more to their needs.

I’m pretty sure if they use it as a personal vehicle, they have to sell it as a used vehicle afterward. But then again if that was the case the dealer wouldn’t shut up,p about it was a well kept, well maintained, employee used car.

I think there was so much hype with these that there were waiting lists and people were putting down deposits to take delivery without even getting a chance to take a drive.
