Trigger warning: Trump joke ahead...it’s not intended as another bash, but I think if we can’t laugh, what the hell have we?

Trump will announce a 35% tax on further profits for taking away American jobs.

How competitive were they price/feature/reliability wise when compared to foreign bikes? Too expensive and just not as good, or mostly just too expensive compared to the competition?

in other news water is wet.

EBR wasnt coming back. they just needed to get rid of spare parts and frames. hence why the liquidation company that bought them decided to go one last run.

they WERE close to the ducatis in terms of performance...but they were $1000 less, and didnt have ABS or any electronic goodies other then TCS, nor did they have the brand history of the ducati.

jaw dropping 13K bike (which is where the prices ended up after) horrible 18K bike (where the prices were initially)

Price-wise, I recall that they were right on par with a Ducati Panigale, at least initially. But during the most recent restructure, last year, they seriously cut the prices.. some opined that it was to get sales moving to show cash-flow for new investors/investment. So they were a bit cheaper than the competition in the past year. But by then, the writing was on the wall and you’d be crazy to buy one...

Performance-wise... it wasn’t as good as a Panigale, but it was closer than one would of thought. But at the time people were doing shoot-outs between the bikes was when EBR still had the prices high... so for (roughly) the same money you could get a top-of-line Ducati, or a bike that most (correctly) guessed probably would be plagued with parts scarcity pretty soon...

Fit and finish-wise, I heard they were atrocious comparted to the competition.. But I’ve never seen one in the flesh... so, ymmv......

Well, there’s the problem I guess.

I know very little about bikes, all things considered, but Ducati’s have that creme de la creme essence to them. People who are street riding them probably aren’t buying a Ducati because they’re going to use that 10/10ths advantage a Ducati offers over another bike... they’re buying it because it’s a Ducati and Ducati’s are the best, in their opinion. Even non bike people oogle and say “oooh, a Ducati!”

Likely the same with the BMW bikes. Chances are a significantly cheaper Japanese bike would get the job done just as well, but it doesn’t have the allure or exclusively of the premium brand.

When people think Buell, they think Harley sport bike. This is ironic because when people think Harley, it’s the antithesis of a sportbike. Already facing an uphill battle there.

Then they price it to compete with what’s probably considered to be the best and most desirable sportbike on the planet, at least to the uninitiated, and try like hell to compete. Clearly a losing battle, unfortunately.

They should have probably tried giving people a Ducati looking and performing bike, at close to Japanese pricing. Prove you’re as good as the Ducati, but cheaper. Once the units start flying out the door, creep that price up until it’s closer to the competition but still a bargain.

...then again, I know very little about bikes. Lol

I know you’re joking, but had Buell stayed in business, and were the current administration to add a substantial levy to imported bikes, the added cost of the import might very well have made the Buell a more attractive purchase... thus potentially keeping them alive.

Or people would just pay more for the Ducati anyway.

Hard to say for sure.

They are way cool. Jamie Hyneman, from Mythbusters, owned/owns one. Unlike a lot of the rare exotic cars, these bikes are in the ballpark with the top bikes in the world.
