I don’t understand how that could have happened, he put airbags on there, therefor his maximum GVWR automatically went up a ton...

I think the biggest difference here is the tongue weight of the boat was probably far, far less than that of the enclosed trailer above. People often have no idea about weight distribution in an enclosed trailer. Or any trailer where you can choose how the cargo is loaded, for that matter.

Ummm.... wouldn’t having a 20 ft boat that weighs a few thousand lbs mounted to the roof of your truck cause a bit of instability?

probably a combination of lots of bed weight (maxed out) and lots of tongue weight with a lot of lever arm. Max out the payload then hang a heavy lever off the back? You’re going to have a bad time.

Can’t see how big the trailer is but either too much weight, rust, or both.

As a side, this picture STILL makes me cringe. That boat is listed with a dry weight of 3800 lbs. Add in the 200-300 lbs of framing. Even if they are in limits for payload (barely) hooking up another boat on back is a terrible idea (in addition to having that much mass that high up)

Me too. I tried to find the story, but all I got was a larger, un-cropped pic:

Kinja'd!!!

It doesn’t really say much, but with part of a trailer tire visible, you can at least start to get a sense of how long the trailer might have been. No telling how it was loaded inside, though. Still, that is one BIG truck-camper.

Same here. I wonder if it’s an enclosed car trailer.

Someone never learned basic physics and to center your load more or less over the wheels, whether the bed of the truck or the trailer. My guess is that there is a front engine car in the trailer that was pulled all the way to the front so most of the cars weight was on the tongue instead of the wheels.

Could be.

It’s easier to guess the weight of the truck-camper. Judging by the placement of the fridge and stove vents in the slide-out, that’s an OKanagan 116ULT , which is nearly 4000 lbs dry. OOF

For less money he could have had something with more camper room that could easily pull the load....

$40,000 out the door. That F350 is probably $35-40 thousand with a $10-15 thousand dollar camper on the back.

Trailers are supposed to be loaded a little bit front heavy. My guess is this one is a lot front heavy, but if you look at the length of the lever arm on the truck’s hitch, holy hell does that have disaster written all over it!

One would think. Yet this guy did this for a living, delivering small boats to small volume dealers, from the factory in TN, in this case up to NH. Off-ramp speed anyone? I’m guessing 2-3 mph.

We had some dirt work done at my mom’s place. The guy she hired pulled his dozer with a Chevy standard cab one-ton dually. He said he forgot his wheel chocks and asked me to hop in the truck and stand on the brakes while he unloaded. He admonished me not to let go, but he didn’t warn me about what was going to happen.

When the dozer crossed the pivot point on the trailer, the trailer picked up the back of the truck. Surprised the heck out of me!

It all happened pretty much like this:

Yeah, I know, it’s not the same thing, but it makes me wonder if the older trucks were just designed to take more of a beating.

Just a guess, but I don’t think those campers weigh as much as a boat like that. So maybe there was stuff in it too? But I’m betting that trailer had a lot to do with the problem, too...

01/31/2017 at 14:22, STARS: 0

Yeah, I think the center of gravity problem is what most concerns me there. Overall weight, he might actually be OK and because the trailer doesn’t have massive tongue weight, and has its own brakes, somehow it works. But holy top-heavy, batman!

Yea, the weight should be forward biased, but still mostly over the axles. That 4 foot tongue extension sure didn’t help things either.

More likely, the owner didn’t wash it properly.

Accumulation of dirt and grime on the frame can leave it constantly moist, and promote rusting. I see it a lot around where i live, as we have road salt. Whenever I’m at the local self service car wash I am the only one who pressure washes underneath. Everyone else settles for shiny paint, and leaves their frame and floorpan to rot.
