So SCCV is starting their Ice Trials season soon and I am thinking that I should take the Mini to zip around on a frozen lake as a bit of fun. The only thing the car needs before I can drive is tow hooks front and rear. I already have one from the factory so I figured it wouldn’t cost too much to get a second one for the other end.

$30! For that? That’s the same as the entry fee! For a dinky little metal loop with some threads. Ugh. I guess I have to pay the price if I want to race.

Where does SCCV run ice trials? Lake Champlain? Boston BMW CCA has run similar events on Newfound Lake, NH, for years, but some years they haven’t because the ice never meets their minimum 12" thickness requirement. Last year, for instance, and I imagine this year may go the same way since we haven’t had many particularly deep freezes.
Could you get away with something like this ?
Not this exact one, of course - it’s for an E9x M3 and ridiculously priced - but I’ve seen tow hook/strap things like this on many rally cars.

Ah, I’m jealous, would love to hoon out on a frozen lake. Hopefully I’ll at least get to watch (and maybe ride along) this weekend while visiting Colorado.
Seems like a lot of money for a small piece but it’s worth it, and plus you have to Pay to Play.

Might also look into tow straps instead of a hook if they will allow that.

It changes from year to year but this year they are running at Lake Elmore. It’s about an hour from Burlington.
I will have to see what their policy is for straps vs hooks.

I have to look into straps but I would need something with a threaded mount. The structure is about 3/4 the way to the top of the bumper meaning that if you try to hang it out the bottom you would just rip the bumper off the first time you went to tow.

Should be fun. I have done plenty of rallycross but never any ice racing. My goal for my first event is simply going to be to not snow bank it.

I’m sure it’ll be a blast, hope you report back with lots pictures and video if possible. Remember to clear out the snow from the front so you don’t overheat in case you do “snow bank” it ;)
