What say you, Oppo? Where does the hive mind stand on this issue? My car will rev-match when I downshift in Sport+ mode. On one hand, it’s pretty fun, sounds great, and makes me look like a way better driver. On the other hand, it’s one more thing that the car is doing instead of me, which defeats part of the purpose behind buying a manual.

Manufacturers that I know currently offer this feature include:

Porsche

Nissan

GM

BMW

Toyota

Alfa Romeo

Aston Martin

Hyundai

It is cool stuff. I am just happy they are coming out with new technologies for the Manual transmission.

Great point! If they are still being actively developed, that’s a good thing for us.

The couple times I’ve tried it I’ve been like, “but I want to heel-toe.” It’s so ingrained in my driving habits. I heel-toe all day everyday.

The number one reason people don’t pick manuals is the level of inconvenience associated with them. I have to wonder if mitigating some of that might improve the take rate. A manual car that isn’t a nightmare to drive in stop and go, doesn’t roll back on hills and does auto revmatch might make some people reconsider.

Yes, yes, ‘I can do all of that myself!’ well good for you. You still could in a car with these features if you choose to, and there might be more manuals in the world because of them.

My only experience with this was on a friends BRZ. His engine management system added the rev match feature. It worked really well, but I didn’t like it, although it’s something I might get used to.

For me the satisfaction of executing a seamless downshift on my own is still significantly better, than the notion that the downshift will be executed perfectly every time.

I don’t think it would stop me from buying a car however.

I’m good with it, same with hill start assist - as long as they’re able to be turned off. I don’t look at it as the car doing something for me, but rather as me having more options of telling the car what to do.

Sport+ is the only setting that does not rev-match. I also have a F80 6MT.

I love it personally. Sitting in traffic its a gift from the gods. And even the first couple times I track the car I’ll leave it on until I get used to the car under heavy braking. It’s really scary the first time you enter a corner over 100+ mph and have to heal-toe - nowhere!  near the same as you do it on the street or backroad.

Yeah, I feel like I’d heel-toe anyways. Even hill assist screws me up as I’m used to giving the vehicle the correct amount of throttle when on a hill.

Personally, I don’t like it. I like having complete control myself, for better or for worse. I do think it’s pretty cool though...probably super useful for people that haven’t had a lot of experience driving a manual transmission.

Don’t have it and wouldn’t specifically look for it, but ok with it existing as long as there is a way to turn it off.

This is what the sort of side of my foot is for

I actually do like hill assist. This intersection is on one of my usual routes home:

Here’s a better view of how steep the hill is:

I have to turn left at the stop sign, and oncoming traffic from the right is also going up a hill, so the whole situation is pretty blind.

Once I noticed my car was hill-assisting me there I liked it a lot.

Yeah, sort of the side for me too. I don’t know anyone who actually puts their foot sideways.

Did you get rid of it for the f80? What gen? How’s the comparison?

I had a 987S and 981S - got the F80 because baby.

The power from the F80 is insane compared to the boxters, but the handling and experience/feedback is unmatched- boxsters are more fun because they are smaller and lighter. They have a buzz thats missing in the F80, but the POWER- intoxicating.

I have driven a 991 C4S on track tho and that was the best car I’ve ever driven.

Love it. Drove a Corvette with it.

I’m not a driving god, I enjoy rev matching and have gotten pretty good at it, but I’m not always perfect. To have a perfect rev match everytime is glorious. I don’t think I would use it all the time, and I’m not sure if I’d be as excited about it if it was forced on me, but I’d get over it.

Yeah, I like it in my Jeep while offroading for the same reasons. The first car I had with hill assist was my WRX. I thought something was broke the first time it kicked in. I actually had a ‘91 Loyale with hill assist as well, but it was sticking. My Abarth actually let me turn it off.

Personally, install if they want and *also* install the option for driver to defeat/turn it off ( without disabling traction/stability control — BMW, looking at you!)

Great thread question btw
