I got in the car to start it up, and before taking my foot off the clutch I checked the stick to make sure it was in neutral. Well, the ‘stick’ was in P and my foot was on the brake.....

I can’t tell you how many times I’ve done that.

My latest.... one of my cars has a dogleg left for reverse and the other has a bottom right (where car god intended it to be).

I ‘air clutch-in’ every time I stop on my mom’s auto Accent when I have to drive it....EXACT same as mine (color and everything) except that hers is the sedan and mine is a hatchback. With every control in the same place due to it being the same car, it’s pretty easy to forget it’s not mine with a stick...

I was driving on the highway in my 128i shortly after I had gotten it. Since Texas is pretty flat and I drive long distances I usually use cruise control. I came up to some slower traffic and had to disengage cruise. Once I was clear I reengaged it. The car downshifted and began to get back to cruising speed. I then thought, that’s interesting the M3 doesn’t have to downshift to do that. I then paused for a good 10 seconds and was like wait, the M3 is a stick, I have to down shift it.

Had to make a short/emergency stop since the switch to auto?

I’ve driven a manual all my life, but decided to pick up an automatic a few years ago for highway & in town (stop and go) drives. First time someone cut me off and I needed to stop quick, I nearly put my left foot through the floorboard looking for the clutch.

ha no, but I’ve gone to downshift as traffic was slowing down and done something simular

I do this all the time when I drive my wife’s car. The funny thing is when I start the trip, I don’t have any issues not having a clutch, but at some point while slowing down I’ll kick the floor with my left foot.

I’ve probably mentioned this here before, but when I was in high school we had 2 near-identical blue Chrysler minivans, one manual and one automatic. Especially as a new driver (although everything I had driven was stick prior to that one van) I had more than a few instances of trying to put the left side of the brake pedal to the floor, or forgetting to clutch in on the manual. I drove each one about equally often, so it was a constant problem learning experience for me at the time.

The opposite happened to me. My car was out of commission for a bit, so I’d been driving my mom’s MKZ almost exclusively. Got everything sorted out with my car and started driving it again. I was cruising along, put my foot down to accelerate, and was very confused as to why my car didn’t downshift to accelerate. A few seconds later I realized that I had to downshift the car to accelerate faster.

:( I use a bottle of water for a stick shift these days...

On a plus side, I have more gears than they do on Fast and Furious

One of the times I borrowed my sister’s car I forgot that you don’t leave automatics in gear. It took me a few minutes to figure out why I couldn’t get the key out.

I haven’t had that problem going between a manual and an auto. Although I did find myself sometimes itching to push the nonexistent clutch in the 128i. When I drive my dad’s 135is, I don’t think I’ve ever found myself reaching for a clutch.

Yeah, I rent a lot and it’s always clunky getting going at first.

On the opposite side, borrowed my MIL’s car while we were out visiting and I went through my normal automatic parking procedure (aka, stop car-put on parking brake, turn off car, try to take key out, remember I’m in an auto, put in park, actually take key out). Anyhow, she took off to go to work the next morning and I get a call ~10 minutes later that she’s stopped and there’s something wrong with the car. Turned out that she never took the parking brake off, drove for like 2 miles dragging the rear tires, and apparently didn’t even realize that the car had a parking brake.

Good times, I’m not allowed to borrow her car anymore for the sin of using the parking brake.

My panic mode driving an auto is being unable to find the clutch at the end of a driveway before pulling out on the street. My mind thinks I’ll be unable to stop the car before rolling into traffic.

When I was younger I’d find myself reaching into space to downshift going up hills. I told my dad about that, and he said it was worse for him, being accustomed to downshifting a 3-speed on-the-column from 3 -> 2. That does bad things when you slam a column-shifted auto from D to R going up a hill.

Ha ha, I don’t usually catch the brake with my left foot when in an automatic car, I usually just kick the crap out of the floorboard. Especially hard if you’ve been driving something with an upgraded clutch lately
