Why is Toyota closing the plant.

Ford and GM I got my head around in that Ford what’d a ‘one Ford’ around the world and Holden ere going the rebadged GM product route but Toyota.

Have they sited labour costs, etc... as reason to close or anything.

What the hell? Ford and Holden I knew about, but i haven’t seen this news. What precipitated this closure?

Holden and Ford closing basically as they use a lot of the same suppliers.

Huh, that’s a shitty knock-on effect.

basically they use a lot of the same suppliers and as some of them are closing too, not much Toyota Australia can do.

I suppose if Toyota were the only one buying the parts the unit price of those parts would go up as they are no longer making as many of those parts.

It’s still a real shame they decided to do it though.

That’s a lot of jobs from one industry going in one year.

I hear the last couple of years haven’t been too great for mining (namely iron ore and coal) due to China cutting back.

Unfortunately manufacturing for one is cutting further and further back into low labour cost areas where they can reduce their overheads or into large existing sites where they can diversify more rapidly depending on the market.

Next christmas is going to be very difficult for many many more people than at present.

I hope things show signs of improving soon.

That was basically the reason why Ford supported the bailouts for GM and Chrysler so hard - even Chrysler going down could have set off a chain reaction through supplier failures, that would eventually take down the entire US auto industry.

Very sad to see an entire industry collapse.

Globalization, benefiting, well, umm, err...

They should tax the urban real estate money launderers and use the proceeds for a minimum income scheme.
