I thought the GT I rented felt heavy, I was holding out hope that this would be lighter. It’s not the grip or the chassis stiffness, that all can be engineered out of a heavy car, it’s the speed at which it rotates and transfers the weight. You can’t hide it there.

Remember when all the magazines were claiming a 200lb weight reduction?

I’ve been saying for a long time, all I want is a 3100-3200lb mustang with a coyote and a mechanical lsd. That would get me to go out and buy a new car (which I promised myself I’d never do again)

It can. I mean that the mustang is only getting to be less and less of a pony car and more and more of a sports car. That seriousness requires some extra beef to cope with all them forces while still being safe.

Kinja'd!!! "K-Roll-PorscheTamer" (k-roll390)
01/30/2017 at 18:58, STARS: 0

Where exactly did you expect them to remove the weight from and still maintain the relatively decent price? It could’ve maybe hit that weight if it weren’t for the IRS (one of the main reasons for weight gain from the previous gen). But Ford could probably go even further and make the hood, doors, rear trunk, and some other parts/pieces out of carbon fiber; but the price of the car would go up considerably.

Also, I don’t think it’s heavier than a GTPP. That, I cannot believe. Maybe as heavy or a little bit lighter, but not heavier.

I guess my thinking is that, if the curb weight of the car shocks you, you might’ve been looking in the wrong class of car to begin with. That being said, my understanding is that the all-new Camaro is much svelter than the car it replaces and an SS does fall right around the 3500 pound mark.

Haven’t had the chance to really drive the SS in anger, but the visibility was a non starter for me. How do I hit an apex if I lose sight of it 50 yards out?

Guess the solution really is to just spend the extra 10K and boost the Scion.

Curb weight full tank of gas (what is said to be in the picture)

Mustangs have a 16 gal tank * 6.2 lbs/gal = 99.2 lbs.

They are still bloated, but not as bad as it first seems and you have to take into account just how much more ridged modern chassis are.

I hear you. I am a light car guy myself. My current plaything is a 1987 Porsche 944. But, here’s the thing. You can’t have all that horsepower and performance and not add significant weight - unless you go carbon fiber tub ala Ferrari, Alfa Romeo, etc. which adds serious coin as well. Yes, a 944 or a Miata or BRZ weigh less, but they do a lot less. Put that kind of power in one of the above and you will rip it to shreds. Perfect example is the 1987-1989 Porsche 911 Carrera. Porsche finally had to replace the 915 transmission with the G50 as the 915 could no longer handle the torque. This also resulted in around a 50 lb weight gain. The sway bars have to get bigger, the brakes have to get bigger, etc., etc. You are chasing your tail.

I’m not saying all of the weight gain in modern cars is performance oriented. A lot of it is safety nannies. The horsepower numbers these days are pretty astonishing. As an example, when I was in high school, a Corvette only had 230-240 horsepower. A 2017 Camry can have up to 268.

I’m beginning to come to grip with the weight thing. It’s taken awhile, but I think we have to realize that for Subaru to endow the BRZ with 250 hp from the factory, it will have to get fatter. Which will in turn take away some of that BRZness.

I just wish I could purchase a truly stripped out bare bones machine for just pleasure driving. The weight ad complexity of everything today is driving me more and more away from cars and toward bikes. The silly federal crash and fuel economy (rather than emission) standards really limit what a manufacturer can do and drive up prices to silly levels.

And for reference, you can do a ls2 swap into a BRZ, keep everything working like factory and only add 100 lbs while improving F/R weight bias. This is the pathway I really want to take once it get paved by people with a lot more money to flush away than me.

I agree, they really can engineer out a lot of weight, but my problem is how the car feels once you start to overcome the tire. There is no way to hide that much weight when it comes to chassis rotation and on grip limit (when cars really start to come alive) weight transfer.

Also, I just read that Jalopnik piece about the 300 lb guy breaking his seat trim. I was really relieved to see most comments were sane and said that it was the guy’s fault for dragging his entire ass across the seat. But then there’s a bunch of comments saying it’s Hyundai’s fault for not designing their cars for 300 lb 5'9" people.

Sigh....this is why all cars are now bloated whales. And small people like me have to look to 25 year old cars for a good seating position.

They do have much higher limits, but cars become way more fun once things start to slip a bit (for me at least). On a heavy car, the speed it rotates and responds to inputs once you start to get on the edge is very noticeably slower.

Feels too safe and boring when you’re still well within limits.

Most Mustangs in the 2000's were always 3,000lbs+. Supras are heavy too. Doesn’t mean they can’t get good ET’s or get good lap times.

Also the point someone made about having a strong chassis is right because you don’t want to do something you’ll regret by having too much performance in something that can’t handle it; parts falling off like a Corvette’s differential coming off or bottom end engine components coming off spilling oil all over the place because they werent upgraded above factory. :P

Realistically, the car I want is the $80k LS swapped ND from flying Miata. I don’t care about lap times, I don’t care about drag racing. I care about how a car acts when driven hard. You can’t hide weight once the tires start to slip.

Kinja'd!!! "Discerning" (discerning2003c5z)
01/31/2017 at 09:11, STARS: 2

I own a C5 Z06, so I get where you’re coming from. But I’ve driven a C7 and my car back to back and I don’t see how they could get the weight down on the C7 while maintaining how solid and high quality it feels. The C7 already has an aluminum frame.

To get the C7 down to a C5Z weight, you’d have to cut out a lot of sound deadening and fit lighter interior components (dash, seats, etc.). I actually like how solid and quiet the C7 is under normal driving. My C5Z feels like a hunk of junk in comparison (as far as ride quality and interior fit and finish).

I think it’s an acceptable trade off. If you want a lighter car, it’s pretty cheap to add lightening yourself - to a point.
