This is like when mommy and daddy are fighting. You run to your room, close the door, put on your headphones, and crank up (insert go-to teen agnst artist of choice) and forget about it for an hour while you cry waiting for dinner.

You can’t ignore the fighting. Even though you have picked a side, you can’t pick a side, as you’ll alienate the other. You’re in the middle of it every day, trying hard to be on your best behavior so one of them doesn’t turn on you.

Oppo is our headphones.   Oppo is our safe place to hide when mommy and daddy are fighting.   We deal with it everywhere we go, and just want somewhere to go where there is no yelling, no name calling, and no shitstorm.

If an Oppo says something like, “Here is a story that I found very interesting and why, and here’s where I found it and here is an interesting car picture to go with it,” then is that different in your view from just sharing a post from Jezebel or some other place?

That may be very well be true, although it seems that one particular post cross posted from another blog just refuses to drop off the page. It has a few times, but it just keeps working its way back up front.

To be honest, I’m not bothered by politics here in general. However, oppo has rules about political threads, and this post seems to violate them all. but then it gets away with it, because it’s not actually posted on oppo it’s cross linked.

The thing is, generally when oppo members post political threads, they follow the rules about warning of political content. But the post that will not die violates the rules that the rest of us must play by, and rules that make oppo a pleasant place to escape all the BS that pollutes so much of the rest of this site.

At times like this when everyone is talking about politics I intentionally stay on oppo because the FP gets so much terrible cross posting. And from comments and other posts, I am certainly not alone in that.

But now it has flooded off of the political pages, and onto here, and I expect the outrage over the presence, and persistent presence of a political post that violates oppo rules is crossing a line that members don’t want to see become a regular thing. About the only way to respond is to make posts objecting to the presence of an unwanted topic, and hope that the powers that be take some action to enforce the rules.

While I myself have only seen this one post objecting to political posts, I have seen a couple political post. A couple of them done respectfully by oppo members, that I welcome, but one that is a cross post that I think is completely out of place in being here. Especially since it violates the rules, but mostly because there are vast many pages on this site where that kind of post is perfectly welcome, but to me it is an unwelcome intrusion, and some boundaries need to be defended.

“After the jump” means that the title or the lede image isn’t offensive.

Example: Back when Oppo was cracking down on NSFW posts, it was asked that the first image of the post was SFW, and that there be some sort of hint that there was some NSFW content once the post was opened.  

Sharing to Kinja just links to the thread, and there’s no discussion but what’s on the Jezebel thread. In my opinion, it’s cowardly and lazy. If you want to talk about it, link to it in your post. “Hey, what does everything think of this Jezebel Resist movement story?” That way it can be discussed within the thread.

I also think crossposting/sharing a controversial topic anonymously is also a troll move.

I get it. So you aren’t objecting to political commentary per se , just laziness.

I’ve been modded by mods and non-mods for being too provocative (stirring shit) by not sharing context, and for being overly glib . Personally, I think that in those cases, the stirring happens because of intellectually lazy readers... So I have been working on honing my voice. There are many thoughtful Oppos and Oppositelock is the counterexample for those who would view anonymous comment boards as nothing but Troll Land.

I actually haven’t read it because like a lot of people I’m getting really tired of all of the political posts, and so I’m just not reading most of them. I’ll usually check out some pieces on Oppo to get an idea of what other people’s views are, and even though most of Oppo is slightly left biased (not a bad thing, just not always easy for open discussion on different view points), it’s usually fairly civil around here. I’m reading less and less of Jalopnik’s posts because they’re clearly biased and strongly left leaning, and anything from anyone other than Jalpnik? I hardly bother, I know what it’s going to be about, and I’ve heard enough already.
