Ahoy Oppo, any of you have old newspapers that you have kept for one reason or another? Do you use any specific kind of container or method to preserve them?

For my birthday recently, I got a copy of the Chicago Tribune from the morning after the Cubs won the World Series. Along with that I have some other old papers that I’ve collected over the years and I’d like to keep them from decomposing further.

Any suggestions?

I don’t, but I’d keep them somewhere with low humidity and sealed up tight.

I’ve done museum work in the past - do not put any modern paper in with them and purchase an acid-free archival box. They can be a bit expensive for what is essentially just a special cardboard box, but it ensures the contents will be properly stored.

Also keep them somewhere dry and dark - if the box is open (which you obviously don’t want to leave open when not in use), light could fade the paper and ink, and humidity will of course degrade the papers over time!

Store covered with acid free paper in cool dry dark place.

I have some old newspapers that I’m storing in a plastic bag. It’s probably not the approved way to do it.

I have a copy of the Syracuse student paper from April 8, 2003 (day after men’s basketball won their first national title - I was a student there at the time) that is holding up OK just sitting in a dark, dry drawer with some other papers and magazines. It’s not sale quality, but it’s fine as a keepsake. Really anywhere dark, dry and away from other things should be OK.
