The 507
A glamorous commercial disaster, designed by Albrech von Goertz, or Albrecht Graf von Schlitz genannt von Goertz von Wrisberg as he was happy to call himself on somewhat debatable grounds. Only 252 made. Then again, if you find yourself possessed of one it’ll be worth millions.
The 503
A somewhat less glamorous commercial disaster with 412 made. Also by the good Count, or perhaps “Count”, von Goertz.
These shared a 3.2 pushrod V8 with about 140 bhp.
Siemens Combino Duo
Not a BMW you’ll note. But it is BMW powered, by this:
A 3.9 diesel V8 producing 240 bhp. Usually found (though not any more, because CO2) in the 540d and 740d.
Lives in a box on board:
Normally the tram looks like this with a pantograph sucking in electrons
But not always. It’s used on lines which are only partially electrified (that is it uses both city tramlines and suburban light rail) so it needs a way to proceed between the gaps and the BMW V8 fills this need. Performance is at a level rarely found on BMWs with a maximum speed of 70 kmh. Why they chose a BMW engine rather than a cheaper truck one is unknown but I guess it’s smoother and less of a contrast with electric operation. Just three were made and they’re used in Nordhausen, a place I had hitherto heard of only in connection with its WW2 concentration camp.

I had an old retired soldier tell me stories about how he used to tear up the Autobahn in his modded Sunbeam Tiger. There was a 507 that he claimed he used to race, and one day finally chased him down afterwards to find out it was a man living a mile away.
