Can we get a description of the noises that causes?

Wow. I didn’t even know that they made flywheels with such huge holes that close to the ring gear. Is this an aftermarket piece?

Judging from the state of the teeth, I’d wager it was something like “GGCHHHCGGHRRRHCHHCHCHCHCCHHCHAAAAAAAACCCCCCHHHCHHHCHHHHHHHRRRGHHHRGHGGH”

Sounds like a starter motor spinning and doing nothing. What sounded a bit worse was the simultaneous failure of the thrust washers and the crank walking all over the place.

By all accounts it certainly isn’t OEM. Looks like a Clutch Masters lightweight chromealloy clutch. Roughly $600 new.

Old-style Competition Clutch flywheel. Dunno why the hell it’s on a stock SR20

Huh. So what happened? Did the starter get bumped while it was running or something like that? Or did that unsupported portion of the ring gear just fail on its own?

I have absolutely no idea. I think they develop a weak spot and gradually deform

Y’know, I’m trying to be open-minded about that thing having gone through sufficient testing before going to market, but to be honest, the look of that design simply does not inspire confidence. Maybe this is just one of those super lightweight race-car parts that was never meant to be daily-driven.

My dad had a truck with a few stripped teeth on the ring gear. The best description I can offer is an angry horse on a lot of meth and maybe some crack.

I put a lightened flywheel on my maxima long ago and it only lasted about 30k miles. Was a dumb idea but I was young and thought it would make a difference(it did not).

FWIW that thing revved fast as all hell and the throttle response was GLORIOUS

It is. It’s meant for supercharged competition engines. WTF it was doing in a stock SR20 is beyond me, but by god it revved fast and had stunning throttle response

LOL good timing! I was just now looking at the Clutch Masters website out of curiosity, and not only does your flywheel indeed look very much like one of theirs, they also post an explicit warning about the reduced life expectancy.

Yep, sometimes “because racecar” mods are indeed overrated...

Agree on that application but even though the flywheel I installed was almost half the weight of the old it did nearly nothing for the vq in the maxima. I only bought it because of a positive experience a friend had on a civic si.

Kinja'd!!!

ps. It was a fidanza and it ate the clutch so damn fast when we pulled it back apart 25-30k miles later the whole housing was full of clutch shavings. The flywheel developed a nasty shutter that eased up when it warmed up but I had to pull it before it shook the interior to pieces.

OEM 2002-2003 Miata clutches have the shuddering issue. Clutch material gets moist when it’s cold and then skips across the pressure plate leaving little deposits that make the problem worse. Every couple weeks you just have to roast the hell out of the clutch to burn off the deposits and then you’ll have a smooth clutch action again for a while.

Yeah it looks identical to the one on that page. Amusingly it doesn’t look like you can buy anything that looks even remotely like that anymore, and I’ve heard good things about their customer service.

Kinja'd!!!

Wish it were that simple for mine but we had to yank it. It was visibly deformed when removed. The stiffer clutch may have quickened its death. That and ripping through first and second gear doing burnouts, added weight of running rather wide 350z wheels and other general tom foolery.

Astute observation. Also the reason why “race only” expensive parts are generally not supposed to be used on the street
