When you ride a 15 year old, 150cc scooter that tops out at about 50 mph, “adventure” takes on a different meaning. Riding around any kind of traffic on something so small is exhilarating, and every corner feels like a mountain curve. I won’t be taking pictures - today is about riding.

I bought this thing on impulse because it was cheap and so beat up that I couldn’t make it worse. I have learned that it is an awesome little urban navigator that thrives on roads that are limited to 40 mph or less. There is something about it that just feels joyful.

I am having a grumpy day. I am speaking in Temecula this week for UC Davis, and I spent the morning making powerpoints. (My associate is training ag supervisors in Spanish). My kids were being annoying teens (terrible twos and diapers were NOTHING). I need to be by myself on a ride.

I live on the northwest side of town. Fresno has no convenient east-west passage. There are two east-west freeways, but I have to go way south to pick them up.

There are two major east-west roads. One is a 6 lane 50 mph road that people treat like a freeway with stoplights.

So I will be meandering across Fresno to the east, through the Fresno Stare campus, until I get to Clovis, the next adjacent town. There is no physical separation between Fresno and Clovis, but there is a significant cultural divide.

I am going to wander in Clovis for a bit with no particular purpose but navigating the Vespa through a variety of urban environments. I guess there are worse ways to kill time on a Sunday. Sorry for the wordy post.

I hired a 125cc in Thailand. You’re damn right about 40mph - we never cleared 60kmhr on the thing but within that range it felt like it had all the power you could use. It was a damn sight more fun than my friend’s old 4ltr Falcon that’s for sure.
