Anyone else married to someone who never washes their vehicle?

Honestly, I’m impressed. The headlights have a nice bronze-sandblasted look to them.

My truck is almosy exclusively for yard debris and dump runs, and it’s never this dirty.

Yep. He never washes it, never lets it warm up, runs it until it’s almost completely out of fuel, etc.

My wife and I both share the bad habit of waiting to the 11th hour to stop for gas.

Not married to anyone, but my dad almost never washes his cars. In the two/three years he’s had the Fit, he washed it maybe once or twice. He has yet to wash the 4Runner, and it’s filthy.

I admit that in the winter I don’t wash my car very often, as it seems like a giant waste of time given the crap on the roads. I also like to think of it as a protective layer of crud.

Same here. In general, my wife takes appallingly bad care of her car. I’ve given up. The thing is 3.5 years and 60,000 miles old and it is essentially a beater already.

I mean I do it once in a while, but every time I get into his car the range meter is just showing — instead of a number.

Guilty as charged. The roads are filthy this time of year, this is a couple of weeks after a wash. It does cover up the peeling clear coat though.

That’s a poor practice for two reasons:

1. It’s bad for the car. Keeping the gauge in the red invites gunk, water and debris to clog your fuel filter and can abuse the fuel pump. But you already knew that.

2. It’s improvident . In other words, if you had an emergency and had to leave town on account of some calamity, and you only had 50 miles worth of fuel in your car (or less, because the evacuation traffic was moving at a snail’s pace), well, it would suck to be you at that point. Mrs. O.C. and I make a point of never letting our cars get much below half a tank. And I store 20 gallons of gasoline, with fuel stabilizer, for emergencies.

Everyone always gets nervous riding with me because I’ll leave it with the fuel light on for days because I know the gauge doesn’t work.

I used to do that in my truck until the gas gauge broke. I now fill up around 200-ish miles when it could go 250-300 depending on how I drive.

I go by the hypothesis that if I run it down to the last gallon every time for the life of the car, that stuff won’t have a chance to build up.

As for preparedness... you’re right. I keep 50 lbs of tools and misc survival/camping gear stashed away though. It’s a running joke “I bet Jared has *item* in his car!”

Yeah. If I didn’t pick empty water bottles and gas station/drive-thru receipts out of the CX-5 when I drive it (due to my OCD), it’d eventually be full. Completely. Same goes for washing it. But, I don’t mind. It’s half mine anyway so I feel obligated to take care of it (not as much as I take care of my 6, but still).

We laughed the other day- she suggested that she should fill up the Foz since she hasn’t pumped gas since we met 13 years ago.. just so she knows how.
