The MG Maestro was quite a hot hatch for it’s day.

A bit of a classic really.

I actually rather like it. Definitely a bit  more interesting than the more popular hot hatches of the 80s like the Golf GTI and Pug 205 GTi.

Even rarer on the mainland Europe.

I like hot versions of crappy cars. And I’m evil.

Maestro!

One of those cars (the Montego was another) that vanished almost as soon as production stopped.

Like most British Leyland cars I suppose.

Not just them though - whatever kind of Japanese car they were making then is long gone too. Same with Renaults, Fiats, Peugeots and so on.

Maestro turbo! I have an unexplainable obsession with 80's and 90's Austin Rover stuff, so it’s great to see some love for them on here. The turbos were a rare beast too - only 505 got made, and I imagine far fewer are left now.

That one above was made in 1989.

So would be the 2.0 litre Turbo, 150bhp with a 0-60mph of 6.8seconds.

It’s top speed was only 129mph but for something like that, that could leave you standing in it’s time.

I spent my noon watching old Top Gear episodes and this post was an inspiration.

They’re just so obscure I have to love them.

That’s not too shabby for a hot hatch from ‘89. And a 129mph isn’t too bad either. Crap, I think I want one haha.

I feel like cars have gotten better in the last two decades - a 20 year old car nowadays is much more modern than a 20 year old car was 20 years ago.

Yeah, I think they’re very cool - it’s a shame they’ve been largely forgotten and gone down in history as an also-ran, since they were very quick compared to their rivals.

(No idea how honest this advert actually is - I just thought it was cool)

I’ve never seen one irl. I wonder if there are any lhd versions left, the last time I saw one for sale was a year and a half ago.

Ive seen quite a few normal ones, but I don’t think I’ve spotted a turbo before, or if I have, I didn’t recognise it as one.

Given how few cars BL/Austin-Rover sold outside of the U.K. in the 80's and early 90's, it wouldn’t surprise me if there isn’t any LHD models left - I’ll have to have a look into it

There are actually a handful of lhd MG Maestros in Germany according to a dedicated forum.

Nice to see there’s still a few going. My research pointed to there being a few LHD MG Maestros, as well as a few Montego Turbos, but not a single Maestro turbo I can find any evidence of - there’s a pretty good chance they were a RHD and UK only model, given how few actually got made.

I guess you’re right about the Turbo being rhd-only.

Probably :( there’s a (slim) chance that somebody converted one and hid it away somewhere though.

Considering how much faster it was than its rivals (on paper at least), and how desperate the British car industry was to sell cars at the time, it strikes me as odd that they limited production, though equally, some sources do say they took a lot of time to sell them all, despite the performance they offered.

I still want one though. Ideally with the stupid talking dashboard
