I installed the cams and the caps, they want multiple passes to 15lbs, then to undo the caps when the cam is in a certain position, loosen and retighten corresponding caps in multiple passes, my back is super sore from leaning over the engine for so long. Luckily the non-VVTI is a non-interference motor so makes it fairly easy not having to worry about bending any valves. And you can turn the cams pretty much willy nilly.

Pushed in the new cam seals and made sure to add FIPG to the first cam cap and making sure to MP grease the cam seals. It is pretty interesting the inside of the seals have a pump like surface so it is constantly moving and picking up the grease to keep it from stagnating.

With the head in place now it was time to time the motor (huehuehue)

I rotated the pistons to make sure none were near the top when I was installing the head. So I rotated the crank back to TDC which was easily done with the timing mark on the timing belt pulley. The cams also time easily as they have indexed marks. and locating pins using the timing belt back plate. Before setting the belt the TSRM has a special set of instructions to go through and loosen a set of caps at a certain degree angle to ensure a uniform torque on all the cam cap bolts.

Mailman dropped off the non-vvti water pump pulley so will be adding that shortly.

Now comes the problematic part. Fitting the manifolds. While the 240z engine bay is lengthy the shock towers have a gracious taper to them so engines that extend past the shock towers have to deal with some space restrictions. With the 2jz engine the room to play with is about 11 inches on both sides.

The standard configuration for the NA motor is a reach around, basically routing the intake manifold over the valve covers. While this works fine, it makes servicing the spark plugs and fuel injectors tedious. Not to mention it raises the overall height of the motor by a few inches. On the previous motor I bought a FFIM, and thought of doing so this time around, but at $500 again, I decided to just buy an adapter piece.

Pretty simple in design it bolts to the lower runners of the stock intake valve, takes the question out of injector spacing and flange alignment.

First off I had to buy some torx socket set to remove the studs as they convert to bolt on this manifold.

With the studs out I can fit the manifold using the supplied gasket and bolts. This will serve for mockup finding out if any piece needs to be trimmed or cut, I plan on visiting an aluminum welder to have them install a vacuum distribution block as well as weld in a different flange and may see about just having him weld the manifold to the adapter permanently to not have to deal with any leaks or bolts.

Disaster...

The intake manifold is hard up against the nipples on the brake master.

Fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu

I look at my friends build, and find out he swapped out to a different brake booster and master so he didn’t have this problem.

Option is to either find a master that has the nipples on the fender side, or buy another intake manifold that has the spacing to accommodate the master.

I did find another manifold, but was concerned that it would end up with the throttle body in the fender up front, given I already put in money for the manifold I have and planned on having it worked on I decided I might as well cut it apart and see how bad it would be to make it fit.

Waiting on a welder to send me some pictures of his work before I send this off to him. Plan is to throw quite a bit of boost at this motor so would prefer if the work was solid.

Now the missing timing belt guide can go on.

Followed by the timing belt cover. I decided to order a new lower timing cover. Mine has a broken tab and is pretty nasty, it will probably clean up ok, and I can repair the broken tab, but for now I want the piece I will bolt on to be secure so I don’t have to revisit it. Also while I was at it, I ordered a clear cam gear cover. A little gaudy, but nice to see the cams and see if there’s any oil leaks or the belt slipping, ripping so I’ll say functional.

And couldn’t really wait any longer so I unwrapped and assembled the turbo.

Kinja'd!!!

I’ll need it to measure the oil line lengths needed as well as to clock it appropriately.

Lessons learned:

Fuuuuuuu....measure lots of things before hand.

When your friend with the TIG moves away find another one who has one right away. Or consider buying a TIG

Money spent:

Timing cover - 20

Lower timing cover - 70

Gates timing belt - 70

Timing belt guide - 5

Borg warner S257sx-e with AGP T4 3inch v-band 0.63 A/R - 975

Subtotal: 1140

Total spent - 27618

These figures make an Allroad owner blush.

It’s starting to piece together! This makes me feel a little better about picking a “modern” project and not going with the RX-7 F3DS impending moneybucket. Cheap entry price does not mean cheap to own.

It really is getting up there. I will say my friend had to write a very big check twice over a year for his allroad. He replaced two of the air bags and another one blew so he swapped to coilovers. I think just the bags and the suspension cost him over 5k or something like that.

No doubt. Probably one of the biggest lessons learned on this whole project.

Oh man the FD3S is so pretty though! Not that the Z4M is any slouch.

A project is a project, and my overall cash in amount is still much higher than yours. Learning to wrench at my own pace though and not diving in head first ( i really need a garage!)

Yea, I could have been done probably 17k ago if I was content with just fixing the small issues, but felt like I compromised on a lot of things which had to keep being redone for my personal taste.

You have no idea how much I dream of a 2 car garage lol.
