Would R-compounds be a good daily driver tire in Arizona?

I’m not in the southwest at all, but I always wondered this because it’s so hot and dry there.Just a curious philosophical question thing that’s all.

R-compounds would have the best dry handling, so it might be a good summer tire to use year-round, although they don’t really last that long, but maybe they might in all highway driving. Wet isn’t an issue since it basically never rains, and it never gets cold, either.

So, anybody do this in the SW?

Are R compounds even DOT legal?

It gets pretty cold out here in the desert (I’m in the Mojave desert) where temps drop to 30-40F and sometimes into the 20s in the mornings and at night.

Every so often you’ll also have to deal with freak winters like this one where you have heavy downpours out of nowhere.

You could do it for maybe three of the four seasons though.

I’m not sure about the legality of it, but I know several people that run r compounds on the street. This is on their fun car and not a daily driver. I don’t think they would be a good idea on an every day car.

They’re just barely legal.

Honestly, I don’t think so. I run max performance summers year round, and it still can get dicey when it does get wet. Being a desert it can still get “cold” enough to turn those into hockey pucks.

Nope. Even if it literally never rains. You’ll go through the tread like crazy. Besides there’s plenty of good summer tires and they’ll still be easily drive-able in the cold/wet.

Yeah, to have the grip is great but unless you’re using the advantage over good summer tires you’re just going to burn through tread.

Do you never travel outside of AZ and hate extra money? If yes, then yes.

R Compound is NEVER a good idea for a daily driver. They wear fast, suck when cold, and will pick up every piece of debris on the road and throw it against your wheel well

Parts of Arizona get cold and snow. And when it does rain in the dry areas it rains a lot. Like flooding city streets a lot. We had flash flood warning in Phoenix last week. And Flagstaff has gotten lots of snow this year. I saw a good amount of ice in the desert while camping this weekend.
