Volvo 240.

A W123 or E30 or E28 or Camry or Corolla or Daewoo.... You get the picture, would be more interesting. The only thing vaguely enthusiastic about a Volvo 240 is that it’s RWD. The only reliable part of the car is the engine, which is a big part, but only if the electrics running the engine work. We’ve had three bricks, each in better condition than the last, and every one of them required a repair that affected driveability at least once, if not twice, a month. I learned to drift in one. I learned how to do donuts in one. I have all kinds of great childhood memories in one. But it’s a fucking flaming pile of rat shit of a car. I had the last one crushed. Could have saved it, as it was completely rust free, but the feeling of killing a pile of shit was better. It’s not fun unless you pour the amount of money in which it would take to buy a better car in every way. It’s only reliable if you count only engines as being the part of reliability that matters(it’s not). And it’s bland as a cardboard box.

I hope to never drive one again, but I see the appeal of the NA. Good bang for the buck, usable trunk. RWD, reliable, handles well... I don’t see how something like that, which can be had for $5,000, maybe less if you try, can be overrated.

DSM’s/EVO’s. They really aren’t that well made. The 4G63 is one of the worst sounding engines ever. Technically brilliant, but the execution is questionable. I would own one, but I have realistic expectations about them. If you buy one and have never been around one it will probably be a little disappointing.

In what way? Suspension’s better, chassis is stiffer, interior is nicer, turn in is better, engine is waaaaay better, headlights are worth a shit, and the trunk is bigger. It’s a better car in basically every way. My NA6 was quickly boring and always left me wanting more (until I turbo’d it). I’m 6 months into having my NB2 and it leaves me wanting for very, very little other than maybe better brakes despite having the factory big-brake kit.

Which McLaren are you talking about? The 675LT, which is the only one I saw the GT being benchmarked against, cost 350k. At the price Ford is charging the GT, it’s going to compete with cars like the 490k Lamborghini Aventador SV, the second fastest road car to ever reach the Nurburgring, doing a under 7 minutes lap

Where did you got that P1 info? The only data Ford released, other than having 647hp and top speed, is the fact that is faster in a Canadian track than the 458 Speciale, which is out of production, and than a 675LT, which is going to be replaced by the 720S this year. If you are talking about top speed, the 420k Aventador S and the 330k Ferrari F12 are equally as fast as the GT.

I think you could say that about a lot of rally-bred cars. They aren’t made to be well built, luxurious, anything except fast. It’s literally a Lancer with a good drivetrain - and a Lancer is an economy car.

Good point though. People think they’re more than they are. What they are is fast.

Both are outdated (The 458 has been replaced by the 488 and the 675 will be replaced by the 720S this year) and even when they were new that costed significantly less than the GT. The Mclaren had a 350k MSRP and the 458 Speciale had a 288k MSRP.

The NA is distractedly floppy. The chassis is just... not great, and suspension upgrades further highlight that the chassis has the structural integrity of a limp noodle. The NB has some factory seam welding and an ENORMOUS underchassis brace as well as braces on the dif and suspension mounting points and front strut towers.

The engine will never die. No matter how much oil it is pouring out of every spot that it could, it will still run. Provided the oil isn’t drowning the alternator. Or the wiring isn’t all fucky. And if it starts, will the trans work? Will the rear end grenade?

E46/E90 3-series. It’s a family car, but because it has RWD and an optional manual gearbox, it’s literally a sports car, never mind it’s only a tick or so sportier than a Honda Accord and has a propensity to chew up expensive components.

Kinja'd!!! "Jake - Has Bad Luck So You Don't Have To" (murdersofa)
01/29/2017 at 02:36, STARS: 2

I had an NA6 and then an NB2 and a few friends of mine have had various NA8s over the years. The NB2 is an NA but better in almost every way except for retro flair which has led to NBs being cheaper than NAs on the local Craigslist, which amuses me.

Stiffer chassis due to a factory underbody brace along with NA8-style bracing for the diff, seatbelt towers, and optional front strut tower brace. Suspension top hats are different and allow for more up-travel (less riding on bumpstops).

Nicer more modern interior. Improved NVH.

Better optional equipment: 6 speed manual, the Hard S bilsteins (which I believe some NAs got as well), factory “big brake” kit.

Larger sway bars, improved engine cooling, variable valve timing, far better crash test results, decent airbags, headlights that aren’t useless, far more low-end torque.

The only ways it’s worse are it’s a bit heavier due to being made a tad wider for side-impact safety and bracing but the extra bulk is more than offset by the extra power and superior handling.

There are also structural rigidity enhancements. More cross-bracing, better suspension layout, and better differential, transmission, and headlights. Plus on the subjective side of things, it has a much more modern design aesthetic and can actually look aggressive (in a Miata way). In the end, the differences are minimal and a Miata is a Miata. It will have the same character either way which is what makes ALL NA/NB Miatas great. Except for the automatics, fuck those things.

Yeah, but the NA uses sealed beams, which means upgrading is easy and cheap. Hella E-codes aren’t expensive at all, and there are many other options too. Including an excellent LED headlight setup from JW Speaker. Even the GE Nighthawk sealed beams are good stuff (NOTE: the GE Nighthawk is the only sealed beam worth buying; the rest are all made on worn-out tooling and low quality).

Oh yes, aftermarket has found a solution. And I have seen those work quite well in person. But it’s nice for some people to have an OEM solution that works better. The NB2 headlights are expensive as hell to replace though. The decent used set I picked up was ~$300 including shipping so it’s a struggle.
