This came up the other day - I highly recommend it. New scam is they call, ask if you can hear them, you say “yes,” then they use that recording to scam you. I’ve been on it 13 years, and it’s nearly 100% effective. Put SigOther on this morning.

If their goal is to scam you, how would being on a do not call list help? Would seem that if their goal is breaking the law they’d just break the do not call list.

I’ve never understood why people would answer a number that they don’t recognize. If it’s a friend, you’ve probably already got their number saved. Same thing for any local businesses that you use regularly. On the rare occasion that a random number calls you and it’s legitimate, they’ll leave a voicemail and you can call them back. Sure it might be a minor inconvenience, but you avoid 100% of the calls that you don’t want to deal with.

When applying for jobs all over, you never know what is spam or which is a request for interview.

My usual response to those calls is to either hang up without saying anything, or to tell them to f-off then hang up.

Good point, but I’m supposing a scammer would shoot the fish in the barrel - those people who don’t care what calls they get. Someone who’s on the list would demand to know how the scammer got their number.

I almost always let those calls go to voicemail - if they want to talk to me, they’ll leave a message. And I just realized - we text so much and talk so little that the list is less important, but still useful.

Good work. Still, I’ll stay on the list, thank you very much.

I spent the fall applying to jobs all over, and I let them go to voicemail. They usually called during business hours, when I was working at my old job. If your resume shows a job history that includes having a current job, most places should understand if you don’t pick up their calls during the work day. Just return them in a timely manner.
