The other night, I had a dream I was in California driving around in a late 1970s Chevy Malibu sedan that was something like this:

Kinja'd!!!

I was test driving it.

It had the 3 speed automatic and the Chevy V8. I was told it was a Chevy 350, but I was pretty sure it wasn’t. Pretty sure it was a 305.

And while driving, I was thinking I would have to check if the transmission was a THM-200c, 250c or 350. Was thinking about how GM installed the lower end transmission which resulted in high failure rates on some years with some engines.

And it felt okay for 70s car, but was slower and had no top end power compared to my Focus Wagon.

At first I thought the transmission was short-shifting, but after putting the transmission in “2" and winding it out on the highway and discovering how asthmatic the engine was in stock form, I decided it wasn’t short-shifting after all... that’s just how it was.

And that made me think of the transmission again... if it was a THM-350, then adding power shouldn’t be an issue. But if it was a THM200, then I would also be looking at a transmission swap if I wanted anything resembling durability. But then I might decide to get it regardless because I might just swap in a manual.

Handling was better than expected (I was expecting it to be crap).

And then the dream ended before I could discover which transmission and before deciding if I was gonna buy it.

That’s a very specific dream.

Yeah... I get dreams like that sometimes. And I even remember specific real world experiences that my brain reprocessed to come up with elements of that dream

Wow. I rarely remember anything from my dreams. I usually just wake up and think, “well that was weird!”

Really? You have no idea how much I can relate to that dream. How old are you? O.C. is 52.

I learned to drive in a ‘77 Caprice Classic that came equipped with one of those 200-series transmissions and the anemic 2-bbl 305. The transmission failed, no doubt helped along the path by 17-year-old me beating the crap out of it. When the transmission shop replaced it with a rebuilt 350-series trans, they didn’t get the kickdown right, and nobody ever would have discovered that if I didn’t drive the car.

Anyhow, my brother and I were very much aware of the Malibu, and the Norfolk Police drove them. Could those have been equipped with LT1s, perchance? The Malibu of that era had very poor rear seat legroom, so any suspects riding in the back probably had a very uncomfortable ride.

Anyhow, in your dream, the car you drove probably had a V-6.

You’re about 9 years older than me.

In the 1990s, I drove a friend’s 1978 or 1979 Pontiac Lemans coupe with a Chevy 305 in it a few times... and it looked something like this:

Kinja'd!!!

And it sounded the same in my dream.

I also got rides in someone else’s early 1980s RWD G-Body that had the 229 CID Chevy V6 and it didn’t sound like what I dreamt of.

And I think the Malibus of that gen did have a police package... but I think it was called the 9C1, not the LT1.

9C1 was the name of the Police package, where LT1 was the engine designator.

Sounds like you know what you were dreaming about. Very cool story and thank you for sharing.
